Hello there
Posted , 29 users are following.
Been following this group for a few weeks now and decided to jump in. I had bunion surgery, hammertoe, plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel release, all on the right foot on Feb 26. Have done really well except for falling twice and putting a lot of pressure on my foot trying to keep from falling. I am approaching week three and actually have more pain now than I did at first. Sutures are out, thank goodness and I am still no-weight bearing. I see the surgeon Friday and will probably go into a post surgical boot. I keep thinking I should be further along but I have to consider I had four procedures on one little foot! I am 63 years old and it is not easy getting around. Hubby rented me a knee walker and that really has been a big help. Happy healing to all!

Well first off, welcome Patricia. Great place here during recovery. People are here who understand what we are going thru. Place to vent a little bit how we are feeling. Some days are harder then other days. Some days the commitee in my head wants OUT and of course there is no way out except forward. Hang in there. They keep tell me it gets better.
Yesterday was another known eventful day. My sister brought my mom over from the nursing home to see me. She couldn't get out of the car. To weak so I hopped on out to c her. Was really sad when she left. Glad I was able to feel.
Last night my foot was soooo hot! Felt like an infection hot. Woke up it this morning and it felt back to just numbness. Anyone else go thru that??
Yesterday mind mind was telling me my foot was never going to be like I invisioned it. Have to stop thinking that way.
Anitagirl - Hope you are feeling better. Being sick on top of this isn't any fun and I hope you enjoyed seeing your mom.
Rena - Patience is the key along with accepting the situation exactly the way it is coming down the pike. I feel ya tho. Hang on JUST FOR TODAY!!!!
Joan - Act on those excersise thoughts. You can do it. It's like air and sunlight. We need it!!! Joan, Haven't takin any pain killers exactly for that reason. They get me down.. It will be ok. This to shall pass.
be - I am sooo grateful for my Saint Annette. I felt bad for her yesterday. She dropped a soda all over the floor she went to get me before leaving for work and got covered with it and ran late for work. Our care takers deserve metals. Make sure we show extra appreciation today!!!
Hope all is well. If nobody told you they love you yet today, BOB from New Jersey does!!!!!!
Have a good day- Bunionless on!!!!!!!

Self pity is one of the most unhappy defects that we know of. It will kill any form of spiritual connection we may have because it demands attention and sympathy.
Self pity takes our reality away slowly and eventually wants us to take a bigger dose. The antidote for me is to turn my attention to people less fortunate as we are and reach out to others who are having a hard time.
Good day

That's nice that you at least got to chat with your mum. She sounds a lovely person.
Your are right about the pain killers.

Hubby went and picked up up Mom yesterday and she spent the day with us. SHe is looking and getting better. The sun was shining and it was just a great day. I took a few percocets before bed last night, 11pm in bed and slept till 6.30. Its been a while since I slept all night and didnt get up at 3am. I have been taking off my bandages and exposing to the air. Does anyone put something on, like polysporin or something. Mom said I should get a spray on............but have to see what they sell. Maybe I should wait until Thursday when I see the surgeon?
Patricia, Welcome to the group. I find I cant wait to read stuff here and it comforts me to know that there are others going through this at the same time as me. I warned my husband before my surgery over and over that this would be a FULL 6 weeks of sitting on the couch with my foot up. I think he is getting it and then he slipps. This is a safe place to vent our feelings and get comfort knowing that your not the only one doing this. Hang in there with us. Seems the world is such a small place and thank goodness for the internet.
Be, Your one lucky lady. All that love and caring for you but I hear you. Sometime we just want/need our independence back. I am getting so sick of watching TV too and looking out the window to see the sunshine and the birds flying and settling in our front tree. Makes me want to get outside soon.
Joan, Your doing great. When you finish up your drawers I have a lot here. I wish I could get out like you are but then again I am behind you with my surgery. I read all you do and look forward to being able to doing the same. You give me hope that someday I will get out and go shopping again, it just all takes time. Rest you foot and be kind to yourself.
Rena, where are you this morning?? How are you doing today?
Brother Bob, so glad your here for us.I have to say you need to see your Doctor and soon. Sounds like an infection to me. You need to deal with it soon so you dont get a set back. I dont have the numbness that your feeling anymore and your a week ahead of me. GO TO THE DOCTOR and SOON. You need to look after you.
Have a great day all and remember "We need to treat ourself like we do others, we are worth it" Be kind to yourself TODAY.

Last day of sunshine before rain moves in for a couple of days. I so feel for you Joan. I am terribly affected by dull damp cold weather. I took a peak at your 5 day forecast and see you've got sun coming ! Hold on to that thought !
I'm happy to report that now at 2.5 weeks post surgery I am over the hump of the slight regression after my stitches removed on Monday and the thick bandage removed....it took 4 days to get back to feeling less discomfort in the foot and my pre-stitches removal condition, but I am there. Someone said in the forums that often it is a few steps back before moving forward again. Spent most of the day yesterday elevated and icing so that I could go out and meet friend for dinner in a restaurant where I could keep the foot elevated. It was a 30 min. drive each way but it was fine. I took an Advil a couple of hours before leaving and another 3 hours later to keep up the effect. I felt so good after an hour in the restaurant that I stopped off at Walmart on the way home to pick up some Arnica gel to try and help my bruising. The knee scooter is amazing in stores and on the flat smooth floor surfaces it is so easy to whizz along....and fun too..LOL. Actually, it's less tiring on the scooter than walking around normally in these huge stores...and faster too! An additional advantage is that if it's too hot in the store (which it often is before AC season) the breeze generated by the scooting along is a welcome relief ! No bad repercussions from my foray from prison so I am grateful for that. Of course elevated and iced for a number of hours once home last night.
Patricia.....like others have said, we know exactly how the ups and downs of this type of recovery can affect patients. We belong to an exclusive club of recoverees (made up that word but fits the bill).....and if you can, keep telling yourself "this too shall pass" (love that expression Bob). I have often used that as a mantra during difficult periods in my life and have found it to help. I hope it does for you too!
Be...you are so fortunate to have had all that help...so good both physically and emotionally. I so feel your disappointment in the extension of sick leave...but on the brighter side you will be more comfortable at work having allowed the extra healing time. What type of work do you do? I am retired so don't have the time pressure of returning to a job... for that I am grateful. I am looking forward to the 6 week mark and these pins come out of the toes so that I can also use a spacer....surgeon does not allow it before.
Bob....let's hold each other's hand to slow each of us down. We will be much more comfortable in the end and probably speed recovery by doing so ! Have you tried arnica pills for pain? I am wondering if they really do work. I'm trying the arnica gel for the swelling and bruising.
Anita...how wonderful your mom could come for a visit. Am sure it did a world of good for both her and you! Watch those addictive Percocets girl...hope you can get to the point soon that Advil and/or Tylenol works for you....or even a codeine based pain killer like acetaminophen plus codeine or aspirin plus codeine...fortunately for me they make me sick so never can take them beyond the first 48 hours of any serious injury. But I'm so glad for you that you had such a good night. My surgeon does want anything on the incision area for now....I had asked about scar cream etc. but he said nothing on it until he sees me at the six week point. As you say it might be best that you call and ask before doing anything.
Yikes ! Can't believe how long this post is....probably lost you all a while ago!
Have a wonderful Sunday everyone !

I am posting using my phone so don't do much in the way of big posts. Foot been playing up all day. Quite red/ purple looking , wonder if just because did too much yesterday , also had strange tingly feelings in the scar area, maybe nerves are starting to come alive again, been lying on my bed most of the day but moving my foot, wiggle my toes and some figure 8 exercise with ankle,
I don't see my consultant again until 28 April, such a long time since my last visit on 23 march I think. Been left pretty much to get on with things.
It's 6pm here in Glasgow.

So glad for you being happy with your feet, nice to hear that. We will

Bob, how is the foot today?
Jenny, sounds like a wonderful Sunday for you and being able to enjoy the outdoors on your porch swing. I sure wish that was me. What part of the world do you live in again?

I managed an hour and a half of watching my daughter do her surf life saving class at the beach yesterday - first place we sat down at was in front of a low wall that I could comfortably prop my foot up on with a lovely view of the whole beach. Just one problem though - it was full of little red ants ( this is Africa... ) and after about 10 mins I noticed some climbing onto my Velcro boot so had to make a quick escape, well as fast as one can make a quick escape on crutches... Can you just imagine if a couple of ants had crawled inside my cast - they were the ones with the big nippers that bite you?!! And afterwards, even though I was feeling quite woozy ( the anaesthetic etc has triggered vestibular migraine which means instead of getting the headache I get really dizzy ) I still managed to enjoy a delicious lunch and a glass of wine at a lovely restaurant there on the beach - first time I'd eaten sitting up at a table since the op.
So after yesterday's successful outing, I went down to the beach again this morning to sit there while my husband took the dogs for a walk. It was overcast and the sea was all beautiful and silvery - so soothing for the soul and well worth the discomfort afterwards! We are so lucky to live at the coast in such a beautiful part of the world.
So I think it's just as important to get out every now and again, as it is to rest our feet. I'm definitely feeling much happier for it, and welcomed my bed yesterday afternoon instead of viewing it as a prison
Joan - hope you're feeling a bit more cheerful today. I hear what you're saying about being left by our Drs/ consultants to get on with things - I always think they and especially the nursing staff should be made to go through the operations that they're giving us care or advice for!
Bob - you always seem to be cheerful! I also get moments of a lot of heat, and sometimes numbness - when I told my surgeon about it last week he didn't seem concerned, so think it's part of the healing.
Rena - looks like we had very similar surgery and only one day apart! I also felt like I'd gone backwards after my cast change last week and was finding it more painful to walk than it had been before that, but it has got a bit better now. I can't imagine how you are coping living on your own, especially those first 2 weeks so I'm very proud of you, but I guess we do what we have to do!
Anita - hope you and your husband are over the flu bug, but at least you've got an excuse to stay in bed with it! My poor husband has had a bad cold and has still had to be taking care of me and our daughter instead of being able to indulge in the usual "Man Flu = I must be dieing" our dear men act out ( sorry Bob! ) But as St George my husband works away from home for 6 to 7 weeks at a time and so manages to get out of housework, child caring etc etc most of the time, it's doing him good to have to do it all for a change! His best comment to date has been " I hate cooking!!" - before this he would love to cook occasionally, when he wanted to...
Jenny, like you say, we get such a sense of achievement over the smallest things! At least this experience will give us more empathy with less mobile people
Enough rambling from me, I'll end off with a lovely quote I saw today
The timeless in you is aware of life's timelessness. And knows that yesterday is but today's memory and tomorrow is today's dream.
Kahlil Gibran
bye for now, happy healing

Getting out of the house today no matter what. Stayed in on a sunny day yesterday. Foot was burning and swelled. Today seems much better. Went to bed at 8pm out of boredom. Haven't slept this many hours since I was a 15 year old with no responsibilities. This ride is without a doubt and mental and pyhsical challange and rollercoaster ride. My bunion gal pals are what is keeping me going everyday, for real!!!!!!
This isn't for the weak minded. Thanks to all for the help and support.
Rena - I got your hand. Just keep moving forward!! when we stay still all forward progress has stopped!
Anitagirl - You have been solid!!! Enjoy your day. Hope your mom is well.
Patricia - Welcome, really nice people and bunionmates here. Sometimes we have to fake it until we make it and not everyday will be cheerful, just another blessing that we can pave the way for someone else.
WHERE"S Carman!!
Jenny - Your husband came up big for you with that extention. Glad you enjoyed that swing and fresh air.
Joan - We excersising yet ???
Speaking of excersising, let's not forget we have to figure out a way to get some in. For me it's ab crunches, pushups and seated dumbells for now. Also let's get off those painkillers ASAP and clean up our diets and little bit at a time.
Until tommorow, HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!!

Bob, thanks for the motivation for exercising done some squats yesterday and got a wee routine put together with crunches and weights. Definitely swimming next week once the schools go back from thier Easter break as it should be nice and quiet. Your body needs as much sleep as possible to heal itself so that is good you got some yesterday.
I spent most of yesterday lying down on my bed, reading or watching tv, sometimes I am just wishing to
not have any pain for a while. It seems always to be there nipping away, especially at night. I am reading at 2am or playing candy crush .

Had a pretty good day yesterday even tho I had an infection and had to see my doctor for antibiotics and a clean out. First thing he said to me is you ''Aren't going to ask me if you can go to the gym, are you''? No doc I won't. Anyway woke up today and foot is feeling better already. Going to stay in all day today. ( Rainy Day ) Tonight I may venture out for a small event. Got to see my mom yesterday at nursing home and she was in a good place so that always helps me knowing she's ok.
Well by Dr's orders , two foot soakings with Epsom salts a day and Bactribin ointment and cover is the on the schedule today.
Joan - Glad you are moving it a bit.
Shout out to Anita, Rena, Jenny, Carman, be, and the rest of the gang.
Let's pray for the simple things in life today. Thanks for our new feet ( well almost new ) and for the people and who helped us thru this process. Without them it would be a tougher road indeed.
Have a blessed day all over this world!!!!
