Stay strong Angie. I'm on day 15 myself and still struggling but I've had fluoxetine before and it's worked then. It does take a bit of time.

Prozac or Fluxotine, has a very long half compared to other antidepressants. Its like 36 hrs. So half of 1 pill in your system at 36 hrs. So it takes a long time for Prozac. Prob like 8 wks or longer. But some cannot take it. Id your symptoms are so bad you are being tortured or suicidal you need to consult with Dr asap. I could not take it. Bad side effects. Toxic in me. Severe body pain like flu started 5 wks. Rage, extreme. Agitated. Crying all time. Liver area pain. So switched off it to something else. Some work for others an some dont. You just need to find the one that works. Im investigating about a gene mutation on myself . To see if I metabolise folic acid to L-methylfolate which helps produce neurotransmitters or regulate them. Im adopted an have no medical family history. So I have to do a dna test for it. But Iv tried 8 diff antidepressants. Last one was Effexor. Been off 12 days. Look up half life of Fluxotine an it might show u how long till improvement . But like I said earlier, if you think this med isn't rt for you, there are other meds out there!

      God bless fr USA

Hi Angie, today is my 17th day on fluoxetine. It certainly is a roller coaster. The first few days I felt worse but don't remember it being too bad. Day 11 felt better but then day 12 was probably the worst. Improvement day 13 but bad dream that night and suffered day 14 as a result. Felt really good yesterday, perhaps too good if that makes sense but back to being anxious today. Mornings have always been the worst and I do feel better later in the day. Symptoms have been loss of appetite which only really started to come back yesterday, disturbed sleep and waking up very early counting the minutes until it was time to take my next pill at 7am (this is also starting to settle now) and greatly increased anxiety and intrusive thoughts. It really has been a living hell at times but I think I'm starting to see improvement. I think as others have said it's not a straight line.

      Thank you Zio10

I looked into what you advised, not sure I really understand it thought, in terms of side effects, I'm not going too bad, but just praying for the depression and hopelessness to go, the waiting game is so difficult, have you now found the right medication?

Hi Angie, I started on fluox 9 weeks ago (20mg) I went to Bognor for a stag weekend, that was 3-3.5 weeks into fluox, I didn't want to go cos I felt hideous, obsessive thoughts, really tight chest the lot.... fast forward to 6 weeks on fluox and I was told to increase to 30mg, last week, which was 3 weeks into 30mg and 9 weeks in total I was an absolute wreck, I was meant to go to Tenerife with my g/f, I couldn't go, I felt utterly awful, my brother said some not helpful things the morning when I was due to fly, I was so crap I actually put a noose up, my brother nearly tipped me over the edge, this went on until Friday just gone when it felt like the volcano had finished erupting, since then I have improved everyday, I can't believe I was in such a state but...... let me tell Angie it is 100% the side effects from the fluoxetine, please trust me on this. I have phenergan which is a mild sedative to get me over the worst, they helped a lot, maybe you could ask your dr.....

Please stick with the fluox Angie, I know it's incredibly tough but the fact you're feeling worse, for me, is a certain sign the meds are working..... feel free to private message me.... Luke x

Forgot to add Angie, I remember you posted saying you was feeling better, that was EXACTLY the same as me, I had some good times when BANG..... it hits you. Stay strong Angie and please see a dr if it gets too much, it can, but believe it or not I HONESTLY think your improving, but of course right now when you're in the midst of the side effects and in that hole it does not feel like that x

There is 100% something about the 2/3 week mark on fluoxetine, it can be the most testing period on this medication it seems, I've seen a few bits on the net regarding this time mark.

    Hello,

    Hope you're okay!

Personally I couldn't stand the side effects of prozac. It was the worst experience of my life. The tirdness, pain, sweats and shakes and massively enhanced anxiety / panic. Not to mention being sick 24/7. I ended up going the walk in after 12 days (couldn't eat anything during the time withou being sick) after a bad bout of insommia and generally feeling like death they took me off them.

Switched to Sertraline and it's made a world of difference. Withdrawal from prozac wasn't pleasant either, it took me about 3 weeks after stopping to level out again. It was like the worst flu I have ever had!

My only advice is that you know you're body and I know these tablets take time to settle but if you don't see any improvement go back to you're GP. There are alternatives and unfortunately it's just a guessing game finding out which one your body can adjust too!.

      Hi Thomas,

thanks for sharing. How long have you been on Setraline now? Did you have any side effects from it? How long before your low moods started to lift?

I am on fluoxetine 6 weeks in and the physical symptoms are very hard. I am confused because I took it a few years ago and it did agree with me fine then. I am not sure if to give up now and change or wait, moods have been improving but the headpressure and fogginess are awful.

    Hi Angie

This pain will end - the meds can be tough to start with but they will help you.  I spent 16 long years being ill and within 6 months of starting SSRI's I recovered.

When you become ill you get trapped in a cycle of anxiety / fear / anxiety and you become afraid of the feelings you have.  I can message you with a brilliant website I know (and pass to lots of people here) which can help explain what's happening to you.  Understanding really helps - for me it took away a lot of the muddle and mystery and answered a lot of my why questions.  It didn't stop the anxiety, but with the understanding it helped me find the right path whilst I waited for the meds to work.

I helped my son recover on these meds too - couldn't believe it hit our family twice.  But he's now also recovered and off meds.

You will get better - these meds do like to take their own sweet time, but they'll kick in eventually.

    Message us or post here.

Here I go again giving info an suggestions an just ignored! Ridiculous! An I have 5 stars darn it! I guess I just cant live up to 6 stars! Holy cow if I had 6 stars maybe someone would reply or acknowledge my posts! I guess Im just not one of the favs on here. Im telling it like it really is. You don't or shouldn't have to suffer on these meds . You can change to a different one. If your at the verge of suicide or even thinking about it, thats NOT good. It's not.." Oh just keep on keepin on!" You need to call your Dr! An if your getting physical pain or labs are bad on them you need to see a psychiatrist about changing or stopping. Not c an M.D. They really arnt trained for this stuff. But Im for sure done with this site. There are other ones that don't have Gods an Goddesses of Information always getting replied to. Amazing. An to think again it took me 10 min or so to reply! How rude! Im in the USA maybe thats why. So long.

Hey Zio - you give such excellent info and yes agree about trying different medication to see which one suits you.  I tried a few before settling on one.

Angie hasn't replied to anyone on this thread but I do know she's ok.

Keep posting - your posts are so invaluable to everyone too. wink
