Help... feeling like a dab of ointment is in my eye after surgery. Surgeon doesn't know what it is?

I had cataract surgery 10 days ago. Since the patch was removed I have had the sensation like I have a dab of ointment in my eye. It's located near the lower eyelid at the outer edge of my eye. It's not painful but annoying. My surgeon checked my eye and said he doesn't know what I'm feeling. I don't feel it's dry eye as it does not feel gritty or like sand. I am getting a second opinion, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone had the same experience or maybe knew something about this sensation that can occur after surgery.

Several months ago when I had my left eye done after the surgery I felt like there was something to the lower left. Initially it was mostly there all the time and slowly went away. I thought maybe it was the point of the incision or something, but the doctor said everything looked good and found nothing. I think I had a bit of negative dystopia where you kind of see something off to your left. Somehow I felt the two were related and even to this day I feel this once in a while. I recently had my right eye done and I'm not experiencing any issues like this but for the first day or two I kind of felt like something was there like you described.
It never hurts to get a second opinion but it definitely takes several weeks for the eye to fully heal.

Your situation sounds similar to mine in that the doctor found nothing yet it feels like something is in my eye. I hope mine goes away like it did for you. I also experienced negative dystopia really badly after my patch was taken off. It has subsided, I still notice it sometimes but when I do it is minimal, sure hope it goes away permanently. Thank you so much for your reply!

It is most likely the incision healing. They seldom use stitches in the incision and it has to heal naturally over the recovery period which is 3-5 weeks. Make sure you take all your post surgery drops strictly to the prescribed schedule. The normal schedule is to get either a surgeon or optometrist exam at the 3 week point.

I asked my surgeon if I required a stitch because I thought it might be the cause. But he said I did not. Hope it is only a symptom from the incision like you said. I've been reading about different issues that can cause one to feel like something is in the eye. Mostly what I've read is injury or damage to the cornea. Epithelial disruption and cornea ulceration stood out to me but I'm not having a lot of the other symptoms that are listed. I have an appointment with another surgeon who has posted several informative videos on cataract surgery to see what he says. I'm not even 3 weeks yet so I probably should cool my jets 😃 Thanks for responding to my post!!!
