Herpes false positive test result???

So I've had unprotected sex with a guy (let's just call him Andy) on 18th January and developed symptoms 10 days after that. Had sore throat, 3 tiny genital ulcers (wasn't bad at all but it hurts abit when touched), slight fever for few hours, uti, fissures at the perineum. Got tested a month after, and turns out negative on everything.

3 months later (15th April), I had protected sex with another guy (we'll call him Jake). 6 days later I developed fissures at the perineum. Also started to notice bumpy surface on the vulva. I think it's warts but doctors said it doesn't look like it.

On 17th July I got tested again. Just when I thought I didn't have herpes. I tested positive for hsv 2.

Here's what is so confusing. I told Andy about it since July and asked him to get std tested + IGG test. Apparently he got tested and it all turns out to be negative. I asked for a picture of the result but he said the clinic from where he lives, doesn't give printed copy of the result (UK). I've asked him many times about it and he assured me that he got tested.

So I also told Jake about it and he got tested immediately after I told him about it. (I told him 3 months after having sex with him) His result showed that he's positive for hsv 1 and negative for everything else. He also sent a picture of his result to me.

I'm very positive that it's either Andy or Jake who gave me hsv2 because I got it tested before and got negative for everything. I also didn't sleep with anyone for a long time before Andy. So if its me who contracted it from someone else, it would've shown positive the first time I got it tested.

If both are telling the truth, what are the chances of false positive for my case? I can't develop genital herpes myself can I?

HSV IgG test has to be done after 3 months for acurate results. SO in your case my case is you have expose to virus through Andy. and it seems legit that he dosent have printed copies. I also live in UK and i got my resutls in a hard copy. of cause you cant develop it by your self.

      Hi,

I got it tested 1 month and 6 months after Andy. So I think it's long enough to know if I was exposed. According to him, he didn't sleep with anyone for months before me. So if he has any kind of herpes, he would've tested positive. Sorry I don't quite get it, do you mean you think he's lying about not having a hard copy of the result? I'm not sure about that but I have a friend who lives there, he told me that normally they'd just notify you via sms if you are clear. But it's just funny that you can't get a hard copy even if you request for it. Not sure if he requested or not though. So I think it's either he's lying or i got a false negative? It's weird.

6 months is very accurate for IgG test.  and you should have done the swabbed test when you have breakout.

Agree with t11261. You bad what sounds like a first outbreak after Andy, but left your testing too late. Should have swabbed at the time for the most accurate and timely results. A blood test one month after the fact, on the other hand, is potentially too soon to show up positive. At least 2 months, ideally 3+ months, are required for detectable antibodies. It's thus not surprising you were still negative after Andy at only one month. Sex with Jake triggered a recurrence, it sounds like.

      Hi,

I got it tested 1 month and 6 month after Andy. So it's definitely long enough. The thing is, if Andy didn't have herpes at all, how could I possibly contracted herpes from him? Unless he's lying about his negative result, but I've asked him many times if he really got tested. He sounds honest about it. I can't think of any other possibilities other than him lying or my result was false positive.

For the IgG antibody test, one month is too soon, six months is not, so negative at one month but positive at six months is possible if Andy infected you. Depends on what type of test you had done and how you scored. Also, why weren't you swabbed for herpes either time? You had lesions, so they should have swabbed you, not run blood tests months after the fact each time. If you get those symptoms again, insist on a swab so you know for sure. Yes, Andy could be lying, but maybe not. Who knows, right?
