Hi I'm trying to find out some information ready for when I go back to hospital I know that no two people will be the same as such but I'm kind of nervous scared and anxious about going back to the hospital it's been 11 days post operation of my PKR surgery I'm starting to get about a bit better at home on crutches etc but I have no idea what my wound looks like how big the incision area is or what they used to close it up I have a dressing on which hasn't been changed once and got to have it taken off on Friday along with whatever they used to close the wound out I've no idea what to expect or what the usual routine would be this is my first operation so I am really clueless on everything I don't even know how long I'm expected to be on crutches for either thank you for any advice and information given

It will look messy. If you’re squeamish i’d advise you not to look and just let them clean it up and change the dressing.

But dont worry it will heal.

Which compartment did you have replaced - medial or lateral?

It's the lateral I had patella something or other no good with all the medical terms to be honest and although I'm not usually too bad with blood etc I'm not too great when it comes to deep cuts

Hi Sharon. My scar was closed with staples. They weren't sore to get taken out. The scar on my leg is about 6 inches long. It was puckered and bumpy that day but by the next it looked flat and great. The crutches, that's completely up to you. I was told to use two, I actually got sticks. Anyway use two until you feel comfy with one, then again down to none when you're able. I'm 7 weeks, I don't use any in the house but still use one when I'm out. I've been out twice without my stick but it was too much. Good luck

    HI Sharon

My scar has been closed by dissolvable stitches. The main dressing which was on when I came out of surgery was taken of 2 days after surgery exposing the wound with a waterproof dressing over the top.im not sure where your from around the world but here in Australia, Tasmania I simply asked my surgeon and anesthetist all the questions you’ve asked prior to the op.

It’s your body they have a duty to tell you answers to any question you have,

Take control mate and ask that way your anxiety levels will dissipate

    Good luck sweetie

Good morning! I am 5 weeks out with my partial; it was patellar femoral.  Was sent home with a walker but only used it for a couple of days / mostly used the furniture to hold on to!  After that I switched to a cane and mostly only used it out of the house.

It was 10 days before my dressing was removed and the incision is about 5-6 inches long and the surgeon used dissolving stitches on the inside and super glue on the outside!  Healing great, and looks good.

You will need to let your body dictate how much walking aide that you need because everyone is different!  Just remember to ice, elevate, take your pain meds and don’t overdo....oh and do your exercises !

I am still having some bad days but they are getting to be fewer and far between!

Expect a larger wound than you expected. It will be bruised and generally speaking, not something you will enjoy looking at but, it will slowly heal and in a couple months will just be a thin line. Just keep icing it so you keep the swelling in check and make sure you work at the movement the therapists give you. More isn't necessarily better but regular is mandatory. In time you will heal. Ykull have anxious moments and wonder if you're the only person in the world that's gone through this. You'll find its 2 steps forward and 1 back. It can be frustrating but that's when you understand the mantra "its a marathon not a sprint". Stay with this group. They are all veterans and you aren't going to have an issue that someone hasn't had and found a way to work through. Hang in there and don't get tied in knots. Its all going to work out for you and soon you'll be back to normal although it may be a new normal. Good luck, now take a deep breath, have another cup of coffee and try to relax. Tbus is from a guy that's had 11 knee/leg surgeries and 5 rehab. Still alive a d kickin'... Just not kick in very high

Thanks for all that information it's much appreciated the hospital and the staff have been brilliant with taking care of me while I was in there but not very informative although scars don't particularly bother I have a few I just haven't seen a post operative wound so don't really know what to expect hence my curiosity now as I have that dreaded hospital on Friday and wanted to know what I should be expecting
