Hip anniversary

Two years ago I had my right hip replacement and a year and a half ago my left hip replacement.

Everything feels normal, it’s hard to believe I have fake joints.

    Dear Chris

That's great news. When I had my first one 21yrs ago within three months I had forgotten all about the fact that I had had a new hip joint. After I started weight bearing after the revision which was delayed due to an accident it took much the same time to have forgotten all about it.

I will just say that nine months on this is the hip taking all my weight whist I recover from a revision of a total ankle joint revision on the other side. The extra loading is saying that my muscles still have some way to go with their recovery but this is quite an extreme test lasting for quite a long time! Both hip surgeries were done posterior.

    Cheers, Richard

Great news Chris! I feel the same, I only had 1 hip replaced but I can’t believe what’s inside me, it all feels so normal. Wishing you lots of happy times ahead.

It's a good feeling to be able to report positive news. I feel sure that it helps those trying to get back to normality.

Hi Richard, hope you are doing ok with your ankle revision. At least Spring might be on the way soon!

      Dear Judith

Thanks for your inquiry. All has gone well but totally exhausting until a week ago but feeling more capable now. A bit of concern is that I'm now experiencing some sharp twinges from time to time at various points from my ankle and higher up on my leg.

The fact that it cones and goes and that when I wiggle my toes there is no pain so hopefully there is nothing bad going on. I've not needed any pain killers for at least two weeks.

      All the best, Richard

      Dear Ptolemy and Judith

Many thanks for your postings about how my new ankle is doing. I spoke to my surgeon's nurse two days ago and mentioned my concerns and she did not think that I had a problem but assured me she would let my surgeon know and get back to me if necessary.

I've been allowed to start partial weight wearing starting at about 10 kilos and steadily increasing. Even this small step has made life a lot more bearable! I am to go for my next planned hospital appointment in three weeks time when the cast will be replaced and the wound inspected. I understand that because of all the bone grafting and repair work that my ankle needs to be immobilised for about ten weeks so I'm about half way through this part of the recovery, then provided all is looking good the really tough part of the recovery will begin and I know from last time it will be very hard.

      Best wishes, Richard

Since I went back to work a month ago I’ve not followed the forum consistently but see in addition to a hip replacement, you’ve also had an ankle surgery? Wow! Prayers for a successful recovery ! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

      Dear Sue

Hello! I hope you are finding that work is fine and that you are feeling good. Yes it ha s been quite a twelve months for me. I'm keeping everything crossed that when I get the go ahead to have my cast off in five weeks time and start the recovery proper that all will have mended.

      Best wishes, Richard

Happy Hips Anniversary! It’s so good to see such a great and positive experience here!! Haven’t posted here in awhile. I’m 5 mos post op. Back to cleaning houses, can tell I’m not 100% for sure. I’m having what I call fairly painful lower back strain after working & wonder if It’s possible to be overcompensating some for lack of leg strength on that side with my back.  Also, Chrid and all those further out from surgery, did it get better over time when getting up from sitting?  I guess I’d describe it as stiffness & some discomfort when I initially stand & for several steps, then all’s good. Staying positive that more time will make better days! Still in awe of the leg pain gone & foreign substances in my leg!

      Hi Sue

I have the stiffness when getting up too. I am not that brilliant on steps either, but I was rubbish before my op so it may just be the muscles are still quite week. Otherwise my hip seems like it is my own and I have complete flexibility.

Thank you for your response and glad your surgery went well & pain is gone also! As I was thinking about it recently I find it odd that I don’t have stiffness when getting out of bed! I’m working to strengthen my leg & know it can only help. We’re not a very patient society and reminding myself a major surgery 5 mos. out, pain free & able to walk & work are major accomplishments!

Hi Sue, with me the stiffness when standing did improve. Good luck, Judith

Thank you Judith for your reply. It really does help talking to others for reinforcement! I figured the stiffness was just something I’d have to live with but maybe not!  How long since your THR?

Hi Sue, I had my hip replacement a long time ago, July 2016. I think it’s a very up and down journey, and sometimes progress seems slow. I know that I was stiff when I first stood up for many months. I think I read that recovery can take a year, so you should eventually feel quite  a lot better than you do now. Good luck with your recovery, Judith
