Hip Pain contstantly since THP 18 months ago

Hi all, I had a THR 7/20/15 and have had pain ever since. I went to the doctor for a broken tailbone 5 years prior and when he took the x-ray he told me yes it was fractured(tailbone) and that I was going to need a hip replacement! I laughed at him and thought he had someone elses x-rays! I had no pain whatsoever! Five years later I couldn't put on my own shoes and socks so I went for the surgery. I must mention that I have had 3 lumbar laminectomies in the last 23 years and do have chronic back pain but I manage. I had a tough recovery from the replacement surgery because I had to lay flat on my back...torture for me and I had a weird thing happen that when I told the doctor, he said it was not normal....when I would go to get up from a supine position...my leg would start to pull away from my body on it's own and I was terrified it would dislocate so I would sit up and jam my hand over my knee..this eventually went away. I have a job where I sit a lot and when I get up I can barely walk due to the hip pain....If I am active during the day I can walk ok....also when I am standing and I lean over or bend over I feel a weird pain in the hip. All x-rays show that the hip has healed but the pain is pretty bad...I can't quit my job...I am 54yo! Has anyone else had anything like this>? I am at my wits end with this nonsense. It's not sciatica...I have dealt with enough sciatica to know the difference.
Thanks,Kathy

Have you had a second opinion Kathy? You should not be in this much pain, or have any trouble walking. It strikes me that you are not being taken seriously - have you had an MRI? I don't know much about what happens with problems after THP - I hope you get lots of replies that can help you. My message is one of sending you a hug and really hoping that it is sorted out quickly for you x

Hi Rose, I have not had a second opinion yet. My Ortho wants me to take Advil a couple times at day...i'm assuming for inflammation. I have painkillers for my chronic back condition and I have been taking clyclobenzaprine which is a muscle relaxer and a anti-inflammatory. Nothiing helps. When I sit in my office and have to get up for something I am totally embarassed because I look like a crippled person and I can tell people feel bad for making me get up...its frustrating! I don't go to chiropractors because the last time I went to one my husband had to call an ambulance. Even Physcial therapists are very careful when they deal with me because they don't want to throw out my back. I have Severe DDD with hernations and bulges throughout my whole lumbar spine and in a few levels of my neck. This is why I say...it does NOT feel like sciatica...I am well acquainted with that...ugh! I don't think I am being taken seriously either and I think it's because of the back issues that this is being blown off. I am getting a bit upset because I told the doctor that I fell twice because of this. I have quite a bit of nerve damage in my left leg from the first time I herniated L5-S1..it was a huge herniation and it scarred the nerve root. I don't feel some of my leg and the bottom of my foot. I also have a bit of problem with the reflex in the ankle but I have been living with it for 23 years and have acclimated. Now that I am limping from the hip repalcement I am a little more unstable. When I first started having problems after the hip relacement everyone was concerned that it was LLD especially the therapists. thanks so much for your reply....I am going to try to get another opinion.

There's part of this making me think "muscle weakness", and another part making me think trapped nerves. Or possibly both?! Have you consulted a chiropractor? Might be worth an assessment? Whether you can quit your job or not, you don't want to feel this bad at only 54!

I like you had quite alot of pain after my RTHR 16 months ago. Mine turned out ot be nerve damage and tight muscles. I was prescribe amitrytaline for the nerve pain and it settled. I went to the ostepath to help with the tight muscles then I discovered a great machine at the gym, where I had my foot on a footplate an pushed it back and then my leg slide back. It was like magic, really streatched the muscles. I found that sittingto long at a desk even now I get stiff but as soon as I get moving its ok. It sounds like you do need a second opinion. Good luck
