hip relacement

Hi I had THR 8 weeks ago last week I told my consultant that I was concerned that my leg was longer that I had back pain and ankle pain in good leg when standing ( one year ago I had my back fused) He said he knew showed me my X-Ray said my pelvis was out of line leg about one inch longer. He said the only way to correct it is if I need the other hip doing the it can be corrected then. I am so upset as his attitude was not very nice. My pelvis was not out of line before the operation. I can't walk or stand without pain as it is putting pressure on my back. He told me to come back in 6 weeks I am seeing my back consultant in May for a check up.

I don't want to sue I just want it put right. I am waiting until I see my back consultant as one year ago when I had my back fused I still had pain in my groin and hip had MRI scan on hips found out I had AVN in both hips needed to get right one done first. A lady who had a THR the same day as me her leg is longer her husband went mad. I am on my own when I see my hip consultant in 5 weeks time I am going to ask to take a photo on my x-ray so I can show my back consultant. I walk with my knee bent on my operative leg. Standing and walking is very painful.

I’ve got a similar problem.  I had my right hip replaced 10 months ago.  My new hip is now over 3cm shorter than my good leg.  Initially I was told the same as you, that I’d have to wait til my other hip needed doing - which it doesn’t.  I was very unhappy - and in more and more pain due to being unbalanced.  I persisted and kept contacting the consultant who tried sending me to an orthotist who gave me a heel riser for two pairs of shoes.  They didn’t work either as I had pain in my thigh and my foot slipped in my raised shoe.  I’m now going for a bone scan to see if my bones are strong enough to have a revision done soon.  Good luck with your hip - let me know what happens?

I am 8 weeks also had rthr before the surgery my right hip had completely collapsed that made the right leg about 4 inches shorter & my left knee was bent I stayed like that for over 3 years as I was too scared about the operation it was extremely painful.

Now that I've had my surgery the left leg muscles are so painful & stiff I've noticed that my op leg is already getting shorter again & having more back pain now & is bending inward at the hip

I have AVN & my Dr. didn't do a bone scan so i think my bones are not strong enough to hold

But my advice is to get this fixed because it will ruin your knee staying bent like that .

My Dr said I will have to have my knee replaced to fix mine. Not sure I want to go through all that again I had the postanterior surgery it's been pretty hard still walking with a walker & in a lot of pain.

Many Ortho. surgeons are widely known for 'poor bedside manner', the attitude of my surgeon was extremely poor when he told me he had inserted my hip joint incorrectly and it wasn't his fault, well I knew it wasn't my fault!

That was part of the reason I felt that I needed to pursue compensation.

Sounds like another surgical mistake claim to me, I think he should be taking extra care not to leave you lop-sided when you already have had back problems.

    Oh Carol,

Do I know what you are feeling!!!!  However I knew that I was going to have  my other hip done in a few months to "even" them out.  But...in the mean time, all I could do was go on Amazon and order the shoe levelers.  I ordered about 6 of them and stacked them in my favorite shoes.  Made a HUGE difference.  They are designed to level the legs.  Otherwise, the difference (by the way, 1" is A LOT!), is debilitating.  Of course, you can use these in sandals or thongs during the summer but you do need to order a few pairs.  They run really large.  I wear size 9 shoe but I had to return the Medium size and get Smalls.  It's all about the size of your heel.

Without these, your back, pelvis, gait will always be out of alignment and the pain is awful.  I hope you'll buy several packs of these and put them in all of your favorite loafers, dress shoes, running shoes (no pun intended) etc.  The pain will stop the first day.  Buy them on Amazon for 1/3 the cost of buying them from a shoe store or a P.T. facility.

I hope this helps you.  Unless you're not getting the other hip done to even them both out, you must have these.

Thank you for all your comments I will see what my hip consultant says in April then I will see my back consultant in May and see what he makes of my out of line pelvis !!! My MRI scan said I needed both hips replaced but when I gave them to the hip consultant he quickly looked and pushed them back at me. My back consultant and GP both said I needed both hips done, I am hoping when I talk to my GP and back consultant that I can ask to changed to a new consultant hoping I can do this,

I am so sorry this happened to you.  Contact a medical malpractice attorney.  There is no excuse for putting you through that kind of pain.  Document everything!  I hope it all works out well when they do the other but after that experience I would be scared to death that the other would be messed up too.
