THR surgery is a good way to maintain personal when OA is involved. It's a good option to keep my mobility .
Follow your doctors instructions and you will do just fine. I have had the anterior it does not have as large opening /scar which mainly avoids cutting thru muscle and tendons for better healing. It's usually a 4-5 " opening where the tissue is held open with special tools as the joint is replaced. They X-ray the replacement joint before you are off the special operating table to be sure that the surgeon has done everything possible to maintain leg length as even as possible.
Take prescription pain meds as prescribes, Do all the exercises once you get home. Keep appts and if anything bothers you call the dr. Office. The nurses are happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
I had 3 THR done over the years and each one was different.
It is always good to prepare your home before surgery. Tripping dangers, chairs at a certain height and many other helpers that the doc will send a list with for your home that will help make daily recovery easier.
After surgery therapists will show you how to properly get in and out of bed, dress, sit, maneuver stairs and all using a walker . Then you can go home.
Usually 2-3 days...
It's always a good idea to ask for a copy of the surgical report and know the manufacturer of the THR components. Ask for a copy of the X-rays as well. Keep a file of exercises and therapy .
There are a lot of videos on YOU TUBE . You can chose a characture type diagram of the proceedure or the real thing to watch. It's not scary or gruesome to watch either way. It helps better understand the process.
Remember it takes time to heal and for the bones to grow and secure the implant. Be sure to follow all the instructions during the various stages of healing.
Im back to frisbee and running the obstical course with my dog. ( see pic below)The last hip replaced 3 years ago. It takes time and I'm a bit slower and very happy to have my mobility!
Good luck and healing blessings sent your way.

Many thanks for your reply and all the helpful hints.
What I am trying to do is find a surgeon with the level of experience and reputation to give me confidence to calm my anxiety.Preferably one who will perform an Anterior THR.
From your message I get the impression that you are based in USA.
If I am mistaken and you are here in the UK I would be glad to know the name of the hospital and the surgeon who looked after you if you would be willing to sharew that info.
Good to know you are enjoying your mobility and your doggy companion.
Best wishes

HI georgie,
Many thanks for your reply to my post.
What I would really like to know is details of the hospital where and the name of the surgeon who carried out your THR.
You seem very positive and are clearly much younger than me (I am 79 and no longer working),
If you would be willing to share that information I would really appreciate it.
Well done to you for getting back to work and best wishes for your ongoing recovery.

Yes I am a little younger than you at 45 and I am very positive. I was shocked to find my hip destroyed by OA but in the end I couldn't function and I was taking narcotics for the pain. I was scared too having to face such surgery at my age but by the end knew there was no other option. I work in health as a nurse consultant so I asked my patients who I see for different reasons, how they went!!
I live in Australia in a town called Wollongong which is one hour south of Sydney. Last year I went to see a surgeon in Sydney. He only did anterior and when I asked him he said because it's the most successful. I planned for November this year. Then my hip deteriorated and a colleague suggested I see a local surgeon. He was lovely and explained everything. He too did anterior so I signed up to be local to home. With a young family this was easier.
I then asked around at work about infection rates etc. I work in surgery so have an advantage of knowing most of the surgical staff.
so, even though I have private cover I went into a public hospital. I feel the care and follow up to be excellent.
The approach used is based on the surgeons training and preference. It's the same with other surgeries. I remember when laparoscopic surgery fist came in, it was the younger surgeons that embraced it with the older surgeons continuing to opt for open procedures.
getting back to work has been great Thankyou. Yesterday I was on oncology day care and bumped into one of my patients in her 70's who had had posterior approach a few years ago. She was so encouraging and reassuring for me before my surgery and it was great to show off my walking and be able to stand up straight and give her a big hug!!
Joy, you need to feel comfortable with who your surgeon is. Maybe ask around your area to see people's experiences.
all the best,

Welcome to this wonderful hippies forum ..
My answer is no .. - Is there a particular reason you are asking this question?
Are you inquiring about the surgeon or the method?
There are many here on this forum who had the anterior THR -
So please come back and ask away, okay?
warm hug

The answer is both really.I believe Dr,Wootton is the only surgeon in UK to prefer the Anterior method.
I understand recovery is much easier than Posterior which is the more usual method in UK.
Because muscles are not severed (with Anterior) the worry of causing damage by forgetting the 90 degree rule is lessened I understand.Since I live alone coping after the op.is a worry to me.
I am very interested to learn of positive experience of anyone who has had THR.
So many posts mention how pleased the person is with results but almost no-one gives info. i.e Where, which hospital, which surgeon even in which country the op.was performed.
This is the information I am searching for to give me confidence to overcome my extreme cowardice.
Many thanks for your reply to my post
This forum is a mine of encouragement and answers many worries for those hippies with queries after surgery.
For myself I am not at that stage yet but offer best wishes to all those brave souls who have undergone surgery,
Love and good luck to you all

I understand ... Before this whole hip thing I had no knowledge about the different methods ... not even aware how major this surgery actually is ... was in denial for a long time too ...until my mobility was so restricted that all cowardness was put aside and I went for it - I trusted my surgeon, here in Holland at Bethesda Hospital in Hoogeveen - I have lived in Los Angeles for 34 years and am back in Holland for a year ... could have had the surgery done in L.A. too (Don't ask)-
I live alone too and was more worried about post op than surgery it self ... maybe that is why many of us don't discuss this ... you go in, surrender and wake up -
From fellow hippies who had the anterior method I understand the benefits -
I am not sure, but doesn't the surgeon have a say in it as well - I mean, shouldn't you be a good candidate for it?
Have you seen a surgeon yet?
Sorry to ask so many questions .....
I know you will make the right decision when you are ready ...
warm hug
