Hip Replacement 9 weeks ago

well coming up for 9 weeks post op, have to say all that bothered me was the muscle contraction on my operated side which was extremely painful, thankfully that has lessened considerably,  thanks to the exercises and the rubber inflated wedge cushion for the car. No problems with the wound or scar that others seem to have. In fact nothing to moan about except being a little stiff in the mornings and I still need my stick otherwise I waddle. I've been told that's because I'm not weight bearing yet. I'm going to bed tonight feeling really positive and thankful that things have gone so well, the sleepless nights and sitting up in the chair for half the night are in the past. Dare I say that I'm even getting used to sleeping on my back, never thought that would happen.

    Glad all is going well for you

    I am 4.5 weeks and Just wish I could get the sleepless nights sorted - trouble is I haven't slept properly for about  6 months due to pre op pain, but now it's worse. Not really any pain now just this restless, twitchy leg thing and out of sinc with sleep pattern feel I need to sleep during day which I suppose doesn't help at night!

    i am sure once I can sleep on my side it will be better

      morning Linda ... so sorry to hear of your sleeping being so off ... I am not sure what to tell you that you don't know yet or is not mentioned before ...did you try sleeping on your side? there are so many different opinions abou sleeping on your back vs okay to sleep on your side ... I was allowed to sleep on my side while still in the hospital - they showed me how to put a pillow between my legs and how to turn - there is a pull of course and takes some doing finding the right position -  and maybe that is why I didn't suffer too many sleepess nights - I had/have a choice !!!!   as for sleeping/napping during the day? don't worry too much about it ... don't fight it ... allow it to happen - 

      take good care of Linda today and be kind to your self --- you are doing so great, you really are ...

      I was told in hosp not to lie on side, so just trying to be a good girl and do what I was told!

      Seeing consultant Wednesday so will see what he says then - only a couple more days to go!

      Raining here in North Warwickshire and that's the forecast for the day1

    That's good to hear. I have just had four hours asleep. My biggest problem 2 weeks post op is sore butt cheeks. Not comfortable lyingbor sitting. Any advice on this. Going to try now for another few hours.

      Hi attractac .... four hours of sleep sounds like heaven for a lot of our fellow hippies here !!!!! what the heck are you doing during the day that your butt cheeks (both of them?) are so sore that they bother you? (joking here, but still...) Mine do too at times- my Physical Therapist pointed out that I kept them so tense - as if I was in constant defense mode which also effected my pelvic area - (tilted) - trying consciously to relax during the day helps ....breathing in to the soreness and relax .... everything takes time -

      Me too, that was my biggest problem, a sore butt cheek on my operated side. And a little bit also on my unoperated side from sleepiing on my back. Volterene pain cream, it takes just enough of the edge of the pain away to allow you to sleep. It has a slightly different name in the UK, you can even order it on the internet, the 2% is way better than the 1%. Just try it, it takes about 30 minutes for it to work so be patient, it really does work, I used some myself last night as my unoperated hip was aching a bit. it ached enough to not allow me to fall asleep, after rubbing in the Volterene Pain cream I fell asleep after about 30 minutes.

      The thing about the pain cream is, you rub it in and you want it to work right away and when it doesn't work immediatly you get a little frustrated. Just be patient, in about 30 minutes it will work and take away your pain or at least reduce it to an acceptable level if it was a really bad bad pain to start with.

      Sat up in bed till 3 then slept till 7.30 so another 4hours. Not used to sitting on my butt so long. Before op I sat down for lunch and a few hours at night on my nice comfy armchair but have been told to sit on harder upright about chair.

      Tomorrow will get someone to go to pharmacy for that. Bank holiday here in northern Ireland today .

      Oh wow, sit on a harder surface? I had my THR on my right hip, my left hip has been really bothering me. I keep getting that butcheek pain in it and I highly suspected it was because my sofa cushion was to hard, and then in addition to being to hard it lays on wooden slats. Long story, we used to rent out a 2 bedroom apartment fully furnished, the new tenant didn't want it furnished so we hauled everything out of there, including a nice bed, two singles pushed together to make a queen sized bed. We had bought the bed and mattress new, the mattress is quite a deep pure foam mattress, firm but also very soft.

      The other day my butt cheeck on the left side was hurting so I ripped off the sofa cushions and put that foam mattress from ur now extra bed in their place. What.A.Difference!

      The pain in my left buttcheeck has gone down significantly. The mattress is longer than the sofa so it  lays on one sofa arm and kind of makes L shape for my head & shoulders ( wedge). I would for SURE not go harder, sit & lay on a harder surface, I would go softer.  If you have an extra single bed mattress (soft) you can try placing it on your sofa and try it for yourself.

      I was by my mother for 2 1/2 months this late winter/spring and she has a very expensive memory foam mattress I slept on, my left hip was better when I was by my mom. I was just telling my husband today how much I thought that thick foam bed mattress on my sofa was much better on my left hip, that maybe I can go quite a while longer before I need a THR on it.

      I haven't decided if I will take a long serrated knife & cut it to size or if I will leave it as is, with the ne end elevated on the chair arm. But I do know one thing, I am not going back to those old sofa cushions.

      Might try putting one of my sofa cushions on chair provided by occupational therapist. I'm scared to go against any rule even tho it's causing discomfort.

    I can relate to the stiffness in the mornings. takes me a while to move freely, and a couple of pain killers!!  It's not made easier by the wintry cold weather here at the moment. I was waddling too so I left the stick behind and am slowly improving, weird though never thought I'd actually have to think about  walking.
