Hi just wondering if anyone knows if you can miss your period after a operation. My period is like clockwork i can look at my diary and know exactly when i will get it... i had my replaced two weeks ago and am due fir my period and dont have it yet. Is it possible that surgery trauma i also required blood transfusions has delayed it?
Thanks xx

Hi LilyLou. That happened to me when I had my hip replaced last year. It came late and was a different flow to normal. It didn't completely go back to normal for a few months. I had a look online at the time about it and found some info about stress and surgery and how they affect periods. This is from the Evening Standard online: 'One of the most common causes of a later period is, unfortunately, stress. That's because when you're stressed, your level of the hormone cortisol increases. And, says Dr. Dardik, "that can delay ovulation or suppress it altogether." ' The article lists surgery as a reason for high cortisol levels.
Hope that helps.

yes, surgery trauma can affect it. I would suggest a pregnancy test if applicable to dismiss that possibility. one to discuss at your postop check

Pregnancy likelihood almost zero....i expect it is to do with surgery/stress. Thanks for your comments. I am not really keen on having my period after losing so much blood and needing a couple of transfusions. I expect i will get it soon.

Hi Lily!
I was supposed to get my period a few weeks after having my hip replaced and it came very late. I was worried, but eventually it happened. I do believe it is a traumatic surgery for your body to go through and I'm sure the stress of it all has something to do with it. I hope your recovery is going well!

I had my period out of the blue because of the surgery - it was not due. It is a major operation and some changes will happen. I too would get a test to be on the safe side. All body functions return to normal in a few months, so try not to worry
