How long before u will be able to sleep again ?

I'm 3 weeks 2 days post op and fed up with having a lack of sleep due to only being allowed to lay on my back. I had posterior approach and am on one crutch but able to walk around the house a little unaided.

My usual sleeping position pre op was on my side with leg over the other which I know at present would risk dislocation. Will there ever come a time when I can sleep like that again or at least on my side without a damn pillow between the legs and if so how far down the line?

I can't help you with this one sue as I am in the same position as you.

I am 8 days post op and using one stick.

Sleeping is a nightmare. I never sleep on my back just like you, always on my side. I also have burning heels so sleep half way down the bed with my feet just over the end.

I am going to put on weight because I am up half the night and keep snacking!

I don't know of a solution. I understood that it would be 12 weeks before you can sleep on your side and then on the operated one, as the action of you putting the operated leg over your good one could cause dislocation.

i am sure someone on here will have some good advice.

Sorry I couldn't be more positive

    good luck

    Hi Sue,

six weeks tomorrow since my left THR, and like you , had awful problems sleeping lying on my back......but this week has been much better....sleeping until about 2.30 then able to get back to sleep again until about 6 am.....I don't see the consultant until early July, so it's on the back until then.....but the dreaded socks come off today...woohoo! So that's something to celebrate! Hopefully, you will find it easier as the time goes on, but until then you are in good company with just about everybody else, I think!

Damn socks are a nightmare too because I usually go barefoot around the house and garden and normally have them out from under covers when I'm in bed. Mine come off at same time as I finish blood thinners: 35 days so a week earlier than you which is a blessing.x

We were alloowd to sleep on the operated side when we were able to and as you mentioned on the good leg with a pillow between the knees until 6 weeks. I found either of thes better than being on my back so I alternated between them. I am seven weeks post TRHR and I'm now able to sleep most of the night with a couple of wake ups. I still use the pillow as I actually found it more comfortable as like you I am prone to putting my leg right over the other one so I'm a bit nervous still I might do that. Hang in there it does get better.

The instructions for sleeping postion THR post op seem to be different from hospital to hospital - I am in Holland and was shown how to sleep on my side with pillow between legs while still in the hospital - this was on the unoperated side ...After first post op visit with surgeon I could try to sleep on operated side - was uncomfortable at first but okay now at 14 weeks post op ...

so, this doesn't help, does it .... I have read many tips on this issue - not sure how you can find the old threads ... thinking of you - warm hug

    Hi sue,

I'm 4 days post op, and hate lying on my back, I'm using 4 pillows and a small v pillow to sleep sitting up in bed, I seem to be getting around 4.5 hrs sleep, waking up because I need the loo.

I know everyone is different, and I can honestly say when I have had a cold in the past I've never been able to sleep sitting up!

I know this might be a coincidence, but last night was the first night without the dreaded socks, and I slept right through!! First time in six weeks, and how good does that feel...hope it wasn't a flash in the pan smile

hope it soon improves for everyone else...........

Thanks for your good wishes....better sleep certainly makes for a brighter start to the day....not as much Polyfilla needed for the bags under the eyes!

      xx
