How long can the Menopause last??

Hello ladies

Menopause started when I was 52 and today, at 65, I'm still having many of the worst symptoms. Hot flushes (flashes to you folks in the US) and running to the loo (bladder spasms) are bad enough but I've also been diagnosed with A F and had big problems with that, now under control with meds thankfully. 

Can't take HRT (family breast cancer issues) and nothing else really helped..given up caffeine and just have an odd glass of wine...you all know the problems, don't want to whine on about them!

The thing is, we know there are dozens of different symptoms the Meno.

can inflict upon us but I didn't expect still to have them at my age....has anyone else had a Menopause lasting as long as this??

    Hi jess,I suffered bad enough with peri then after my periods stopped it all got worse. Not flushes just boiling hot all the time and so miserable heart palpitations depression anxiety etc.

    HRT has dine a lot to improve most symptoms.

    I know you can't take it, before I managed to convince my doctor to try it I had read a lot about the benefits of sage, I wonder if it would be worth you giving that a try?

      Thanks for your post and I can sympathise with you with these symptoms as I've had similar and know how depressing it can all be. The palpitations are scary and I ended up with Atrial Fibrillation so hope you don't go there. Thanks too for your Sage comment.

      Yes I have simular thing wollf Parkinson white syndrome. But that is something I was born with.

      I've had it a few times rapid heart rate for no apparent reason, first time around 16 lasted for a few seconds then again around 20 years old.

      I had a worrying one aged 30.

      But had it about 10 years ago and it didn't put itself right so showed up on the ecg. It did go overnight it was a bit scary but I didn't feel as freaked out by it as I did with the palpitations that came with anxiety and a feeling of breathlessness.

      I haven't had any since starting HRT.

      Really wish I could have HRT Zigangie but Grandmother, Mother died from it and my sister has breast cancer so it's a bit dicey. Sounds like it's made a big difference to you.... the breathlessness is horrible, really awful. Very glad to hear things have settled down with you.

    Mine started at 52 also. I am now 62. Hot flashes have never stopped. They might become better then name....they are back.vi also get the precursor to the flash which is a sudden quick dizzy, then an odd feeling in my stomach and feel off balance.

    Do you see, you are not alone.......

      Yes Lolasmom, I know exactly what you mean about the sick, dizzy turn before a flash, really horrible symptom along with the rest of it. Thanks for your reply and it's good to know I'm not alone as you say.

      Your last post to me hasn't appeared here Marlene but I saw from the email to check out Janeejay's 66 symptoms of the menopause so thanks for that. I'd read an article describing 30 so it's a surprise to see so many...  What we ladies suffer!

      Much appreciated Marlene, Jaynee jay post of list of symptoms is a great source of knowledge, very helpful . Can't believe their are so many symptoms and some I had I did not even realise were part of the perimenopause or menopause.

      This site is so amazing I tell everyone I know about the site can't believe it was here for years before I knew about it.

    Omg! I've been in peri about 3 yrs, and I may have 15 more yrs??? Why did God punish us? FEEL BETTER JESS???

      Ha ha Colleen.... you do feel like you are being punished for something at times! 😄.  Hot flushes during the night!  Mine seen a little milder now so I live in hope!
