Hi Marcia
It's impossible to say. People have different experiences of pain and react differently to drugs. The best advice I can give you is "don't be brave" - if you are in pain then say so, so that staff can make sure you have what is right for you.
?Good luck with the replacement - I had mine six months ago and had no pain at all! But I am told I have a very high pain threshold.

I got a Percocet prescription from my doctor before my surgery to have it filled and on my nightstand when I got home. I don't like feeling doped up so I usually break them in half. It is just enough to make me not ache at all. I have low kidney function and cannot take NSAIDS ( Iburophen, Advil, Aspirin etc.) or Ibuprofen would probably be enough. The three days in the hospital are another matter, day two was horrible pain but by day 3 it was not bad.

Hi marcia
I see you have something prescribed now,iv not heard of it I'm in the UK. would say you definitely need a pain killer to also help with reducing inflammation as well, something like ibrufen.paracetomol is great if taken on a regular basis. Codeine is good too,I only took this at night as it helped me sleep too.
My advice is don't let the pain come to you, stay on top of the pain by taking the medication as prescribed on a regular basis.
Good luck 🍀 with the operation.
Regards
Nicky

Hi Marcia,
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! In my experience, doctors don't give patients a preferred list. They generally put you on what they are comfortable with, taking into account your medical history. There are 3 different levels (potency) of narcotics, and there are several types for each category. Everyone reacts differently, so unless you try them yourself there is no way of knowing what will work for you. Prior to the surgery its a good idea to find out what to expect from that specialist. Some surgeons are liberal and others very conservative.
Best of luck!

Hi Marcia, I am new to this forum so I can't tell where you live. I live in California and my surgeon( or actually his PA) gave me 5 Rex's to fill before surgery. I asked for a non-opioid pain med. she ended up giving me both. Then a sleeping RX, an anti-spasm med and something else. I left hospital on same day of surgery. I only used about 5 of the really strong pain med ( since them I have disposed of the opioids- they are dangerous), then used the Tramadol for a few more days. After day seven I have only used Tylenol. Pain has been very manageable for me. Believe me I was in worse pain B4 surgery. I am two weeks and one day out of surgery, walking w just a cane - well only for about 10-20 minutes a day but hey. Just got released from PT. I will have to take it easy for the next month but so far so good.

Marcia, so glad to hear you are not in pain. I was lucky, I had two close tennis buddies that had hip replacement before me. One had her's done in October, and one friend just three weeks before me using same surgeon and same hospital. They were so supportive. The day before my surgery the October lady sent me really great texts of encouragement. They have been there to answer all my questions. The second surgery lady sent me video of her walking in hospital just hours after surgery. I just tuned 60, but years of playing tennis, running, biking and skiing caught up to me. For the last six weeks before surgery all I could do was swim. But I actually started to get good at it again. I was on the swim team in high school so muscle memory must have kicked in.
