I can't stop panicking.  I have had anxiety for years but this is horrendous.  I don't want to phone NHS 24 as i feel stupid doing so, but i don't think i can handle this any longer.  I'm on 150mg of sertraline and 40mg of propanolol.  But yesterday, and today is killing me.  I can't handle this.  I don't know what to do.

Hi Lauren, I'm so sorry you're suffering so much.  I live in  California and don't recognize the meds you're taking.  I have to take valium (in the benzodiazapine grounp) for my anxiety but it's pretty sporadic. I have had two full-blown panic attacks, one that required hospitalization. I have learned to get my anxiety somewhat under control through relaxation exercises. I don't know if this is something you've tried. I use a breathing technique which calms the parasympathetic or sympathetic nervous system in my body. Fill your body with air so your tummy distends. Place your hand on your stomach and feel it push out so you know you are doing it right. Breathe in to a count of 5 and out to the same count (or longer if you wish). I also say a mantra: "Good air in, better air out." I used to say "bad air out" but this made me anxious. I have found focusing on breathing, and knowing this type of breath control short circuits the system for excitability has helped me a lot. I used to have panic attacks when driving but this is no longer a problem for me.  I still have situational stress and will breathe through it.  I hope this helps you.  You have my total sympathy.

A benzodiazepine type medicine is basically a sedative which will calm you down. Like Prozac or Vallium I think?. They work but can be highly addictive.

prozac is a antidepressant  , benzos are tranqualizers  ,

Hi Lauren, your story is just like mine. I have anxiety on and off and when it's bad I'm like you just want to sleep but can't, can't think about anything else, can't eat and feel hot and cold at the same time. When I'm like that I find that I feel better by being distracted especially being around others but people who I know would understand me. Do you have a relative or friend who doesn't work that you could spend time with. Also going to the gym, run, swim etc helps me. Seeing a councillor, therapist, cbt specialist also helped as it was a point each week that I could work towards. Hope you feel better soon.

Lauren, this is an obvious panic attack. Do you have access to a drug in the benzodiazapine class? This would be Valium, Xanax, etc. If so, it might be helpful to ingest 5 mg of Valium or 1 mg of Xanax for example to help calm you and allow you to sleep. You are currently in a cycling mode which doesn't allow you to calm down. If you do not have any medication, try a warm bath, and sit in it for a good period of time. This may help to bring down the anxiety and allow you to feel less stress.

If this persists, your best bet is the emergency room to get immediate medical intervention. Good luck.

    Hi Lauren.

afvice is,  you will not stop worrying if you had advice. Anxiety disorder is horrible and everybody will tell you, they have had anxiety.  Truth is If it's GAD  they won't understand and that makes you feel abnormal.  Reality of it is your one step ahead, becouse you have already thought and dealt with it.  Problem is nobody else is there. I'm struggling too as all ppl on this page. But the fact everybody is doing this is becouse they don't need numb help and they want to connect with people who feel that.  Don't let it cane you because it can be sorted.  Just stay open with it! Btw it eases my anxiety to try to help other ppl with it, and I still don't fully understand it myself.. Stay strong kidda wink

I have an appointment in 45 minutes, but I really don't know how to explain it too them. I always feel stupid

This is really common, they will see people with it all the time. They might ask you to fill in a questionnaire rating your feelings on a scale which will help you explain and them understand. Be honest, tell them you can't eat, sleep etc. Hopefully they will ask you to come back every week for a while and this will give you something to work towards.
