I emailed your web site about a week ago explaining the horrendous side affects which I believed I had through taking simvastatin. My doctor did not agree and said I had polymigesic rheumatica and gave me steroids. I was no better and my steroid's only masked the terrible pain and muscle weakness it was so bad I could hardly walk or even function. I have had more intensive blood testsin the last week and it has been confirmed that it is definitely caused by the semvastatin,. My doctor apologised for not believing me and said it was the worst case he had ever seen that is why he did not think it was the semvastatin. I am seeing him on Thursday as he needs time to think through what he is going to do for me. Can anyone tell me if there is a treatment to reverse the process quickly as he thinks it may takes months to come out of my system and doesn't know what damage it may have left permanently.

Hi I know its 4 years since your post but I wondered how you got on and how long it took for side effects to disappear etc. I am currently going through the same thing and would really appreciate a response from you or anyone else who has suffered the same thing.

    Thanks

It can take time to clear your system of statins, but stay with it and ask for alternatives (dependant on your PMH) like Lipitor. Good Luck

Remember: GP's get bonuses from drug companies!!!

I took a statin for two years, and it took a further five years before I was able to use my hands for knitting without pain. The other pains took slightly less time to go, but I am left with muscles that are weaker than before.

What came back sooner was full use of my brain, and memory. I had thought I had had some damage there during the bypass operation, but thinking back the problem was not there while I was in hospital, which it would have been if it had been true brain damage. It is not nice thinking you have the start of dementia, in your early fifties.

I still have to formally refuse statins once a year - GPs seem to be obliged to tell us to take them.

All statins cause these problems - especially the effect on the brain.

I am taking Q10, go to your local health food shop and ask about Q10 and statin damage, I suffered very badly also but thanks to Q10 I can walk better than I did and my strenth is returning
