I had cataract surgery 50 something years ago and here is my problem

i had congenital cataracts in both eyes and i had them removed when i was 8 & 10...i am now 64...In December of 2016 I went to a retina specialist because another doctor saw that i had macular edema in both eyes. He gave me a shot in one eye and say he would watch it...then he mentioned about inserting an iol in both eyes...he explained that i would not have to wear glasses or contacts again..i told him at the time i would think about it as i had really good vision in my left eye with contacts 20/20 and i didnt wear a contact in my right eye..so i thought about it and called him back and told him yes but i wanted to do my left eye first because i was afraid i was going to lose insurance due to president trump...i had the surgery feb 2017...i saw retinal specialist a month later...i told him at that time that vision was ok about 10"-12" from my face but beyond that it was blurry to some degree...he said he made me nearsighted in an offhand way...to say the least i am devastated..the lens is sewn in and by that i mean it is scleral-fixated iol...and it has been pure hell since march 2017..i have 2 opticians who have told me my eye is misshapen and with having myopia in one eye and a cataract lense in the other i have become a complicated patient and that i might not be able to see as good as i did before...i have gotten contact lenses but i still don't see as well as before...20/30-20/40 at the most..i have another appointment set up with an eye doctor to see how my eye really looks like and to see if he knows what can be done...i am so unhappy...i screwed up and i want to see if there is anyone on this group that has gone thru a similar problem with scleral fixated iol's.. i am also going to go back to the retina specialist to see what happen...i am seriously considering filing a suit against him...geez

Unfortunately, it seems that too many doctors push for surgical solutions without letting the patients know about all the possible bad ramifications.

Why can't you have the IOLs removed if you never had IOLs to begin with?

thank you for replying...it is not that simple...these iol's are sewn in and have misshapen my eye where i am myopia...i can see sorta close but not far away...the right has not been done...so it is difficult to fix me with either contacts or glasses to see...i have become a complicated patient...i am seeing a doctor next week to see what can be done if anything...

I guess that's what "scleral fixated" IOLs mean...I wasn't sure. I hope you can find a solution.

thanks for the reply...i have been fixed for contacts but i still don't see as well as i did before i had surgery...the OD told me i would not see as good with glasses as i would with contacts...so i have not gotten any yet...i want to see what this next doctor says...i want the iol out...but i am just afraid that its not possible...that it might damage that eye further...i won't know anything till i see him...

Actually I don't understand why they can't be removed even if they're sewn in since they're not being replaced, but I'm not a doctor so I would have to try to research it.

I went to the doctor that I said I was going to...he wasn't that much help...I thought I might get some empathy or help but it was a waste of time...he basically said that I was lucky to see at 20/30.with contacts and 20/50 without...that I could see to drive...I am a professional artist and I cannot see detail anymore with contacts or glasses...I had 20/20 before the surgery and this surgery caused the myopia...the retina specialist didn't tell me I would have any problems...but I have been in hell since march 2017..now the second opinion doctor told me that the iol could be removed but he did not know whether I would see like I did before...that is in my left eye...my right eye had the lens removed 50+ years ago but I don't see as clearly...I asked him if I could have surgery to clear it up and he said no..all in all he said I would have to live with it...so I see the retina specialist next week and i am going to put it to him and if i am not helped than i am contacting a personal injury attorney to see if i can get help...this has put me in a financial bind...if you want to see my art it is Sharon Lyn Jones Artist on facebook...i have not painted since march 2017

My suggestion will be not to do anything (such as replacing the IOL) unless the doctors and you understand completely the reason for the unclear vision in the eye. That is, what is the reason for you not being able to see 20/20 even with glasses or a contact lens? Once the exact reason is understood, it will be much easier to come up with the best next step.
