Hi Tara, both your TSH and the cysts indicate hypothyroid disease. So you'll need medication. Ideally the medication takes some of the stress off the thyroid gland and can sometimes help shrink cysts.
Surgery should be seen as a last resort, as there is no thyroid replacement method identical to the body's own. Also, it seems younger patients gave a better chance of health recovery following thyroid surgery than older patients.
If you read through the many posts here, you'll find that people with more delicate immune systems (often the case with thyroid disease), frequently cycle through many different medications before finding one that works best. At the end of the list, but most bio identical is an OTC bovine glandular called thyroGold. You can purchase online. I recommend this, having gone through 8 different meds myself, and watching my mother's life long struggle.
My cysts actually grew while I was taking synthetic meds, so I would never recommend those. Other people have done ok with the synthetics, but if you read through the many posts here, you see a lot of people suffer horrible side effects from the synthetic meds.
In addition to medical support, thyroid patients often benefit greatly from a gluten free (absolutely no cheating!) diet, as well as high protein, such as Paleo diet. You'll need good quality supplements that provide high nutrients, minerals and coblimated B vitamins. The biggest help for me has been essential amino acids. I've found herbs and acupuncture to also be extremely helpful.
Educate yourself. Thyroid disease is autoimmune and is most often caused by exposure to chemicals and radiation. Mercury and bromine exposure are major culprits in thyroid disease. Do your best to remove exposure, eliminate prepared and processed foods(believe it or not, salad dressing is loaded with unhealthy preservatives), beauty products with loads of chemicals, cleaning supplies and other immune system triggers. Herbs and supplements will support the immune system. Detoxing and cleansing are also extremely helpful.
If that doesn't give you some insight as to what your dealing with, you might also want to post whether you're on meds, how your general health is, and what specialists you've seen. You should be seeing and endocrinologist if you aren't already.
