I've heard many talk about having severe muscle pain

Is muscle pain due to the posterior approach? I will be having the anterior lateral approach. I figure since less muscle on the side of the hip I won't have as many problems with it healing

I am 3 weeks post-op as of today.  The majority of my pain to date has been muscle pain. When I get the other hip replaced, I plan on stretching the hamstring, quad, and hip muscles as much as I can prior to the surgery.  When I woke up in recovery after the surgery, the pulling on those muscles was by far the most painful issue I experienced.

I had the posterior approach performed.  My understanding is that the hip procedure rules do not apply if you have the anterior lateral approach.  The hip procedure rules are in play for 16 weeks and include rules such as not crossing your legs, not bending more than 90 degrees and not having your knee above your hip.

Interesting how the rules in the US are different from the rules in the UK.  How long did you have to wear the TED stockings?  I was told 6 weeks for the stockings, but 16 weeks for all the other rules.

Hi Eric, it's not even a UK / USA thing, advice across the UK differs.I had posterior and was told 'll restrictions, but if it hurts don't do it'. I wore the stockings for about 4 weeks.

That should have been 'no restrictions...'

Thanks for the info Jennifer.  I agree with you that the restrictions appear to be defined on a doctor by doctor basis.  The staff at physical therapy explained the other day that some doctors want the TED stockings worn for 2 weeks, others for 6 weeks.  I guess there is no real hard and fast answer to the restrictions except perhaps what you stated.  If it hurts, stop doing it.
