IBS, depression, water infection, antibiotics, diarrhoea and nausea.

I am waiting for a big spinal operation and am very depressed as cannot walk far and only with a zimmer frame. Unfortunately the setraline tablets given to me have really upset my IBS and made me feel so ill.

I have also developed a water infection which has meant more antibiotics which had caused severe diarrohea and nausea, also caused by the setraline.

I have really liquid diarrohea and have taken immodium twice today already. My stomach is also burning with acid coming up into my throat. I guess I can take Gaviscon.

MY doctor has told me to half the dose of setraline to see if it helps.

Does anyone else suffer with severe reactions to tablets, especially antibiotics?

Thank you for any help given.

Have you tried any natural medications? I know that some people put their complete trust and faith into traditional doctors, however, pharmaceuticals and antibiotics can do more harm than good (even doctors admit to it-that is if they are honest!). I highly recommend the following (completely harmless and side effect-free) effective natural remedies. Slippery elm-wonderful to reduce IBS symptoms, promote healing your gut, stop you diarrhea and /or constipation and help formation of proper stools. For GERD- take DGL licorice root and your stomach acid will subside within minutes, licorice will also help heal your stomach as well. Also, an 8 oz glass of water with one table spoon of apple cider vinegar + one table spoon of honey in the morning and evening will stabilize any acidity, especially if your have GERD and promote healthy digestion. Peppermint gels supplement is another great oil to control IBS symptoms. Turmeric supplement works wonders by reducing inflammation in your body and detoxing your system, it's like a powerhouse for ehaling! Finally, you need to add good bacteria to your body, especially after taking all these nasty antibiotics-many people have cured IBS by drinking kefir daily (an excellent natural sourced of probiotics and healthy bacterial strains). Also, try an anti inflammation diet for 30 days (you can look it up online).

Apple cider vinegar is acidic and peppermint oils can also cause heartburn. Both these treatments should be taken with caution. For heartburn, the best thing is milk because it is alkaline and soothes away heartburn.

Apple cider vinegar should only be taken DILUTED with water-only 1 table spoon with 8 fl oz glass-you can do your research online, it actually stabilizes acidity within one's body and neutralizes stomach acid. Peppermint oil supplements will never cause a heartburn if taken right before meal. In any case:) natural remedies-if used properly-are a far safer and less risky alternative to any prescribed medication that causes nasty side-effects and greater health issues in the end. It always strikes me as ironic how people "fight" natural remedies or act skeptical but will religiously swallow and try any toxic pill prescribed by a "doctor" that makes them sicker and only covers up a health problem:-).

I have chronic acid reflux caused by a weak oesophageal sphincter that opens when it shouldn't and lets the acid spew out. For me, peppermint treatment aggravates the problem because it relaxes the sphincter too much. For this reason, peppermint is not recommended for people with reflux.Apple cider vinegar still tastes highly acidic for me, even diluted with water and would really irritate my stomach. The only natural heartburn remedy for me is milk because it soothes the stomach and is alkaline. It's not that I'm skeptical of natural remedies; it's simply that some of them upset my stomach.

I react to antibiotics and other medications. I have a fear if being prescribed any medication. I would aim to come off Sertraline all together once you have dropped down to half a tablet. These tablets are of no benefit to you if they make you this ill.

Thank you Pippa for your advice which is really appreciated.

I am not surprised I am depressed as we had a really bad house fire and then moved to a new area near our son leaving all our friends behind.

I am also waiting for a very big spinal operation and just after moving into our new home, my disc popped out and I was in terrible pain and hospitalised for 5 weeks. I am now unable to walk more than a few yards with a mobility frame and have to use a wheelchair. It is not surprising I am suffering from Anxiety and depression which obviously aggravates my IBS .

Reducing setraline obviously still has side affects but it must be done gradually. Hopefully there is another tablet I can take which will not upset me so much.

      Thank you once again.

All anti depressants have these sort of side effects I'm afraid. My doctor wanted to prescribe them to me for neuralgia but I felt I couldn't take the risk of getting all these nasty side effects so I refused them. I lost faith in my doctor who was the only one able to diagnose my IBS because he fobbed off my concerns about anti depressants and I felt he was hiding the truth from me.

I would recommend other methods to ease your anxiety and depression such as relaxation therapy and taking up a hobby to distract your mind. Maybe try getting out of the house in your wheelchair; fresh air can do wonders for your mood. Counselling or CBT may also be useful.

    Hi Sylvia

Sertraline does have some good effects with IBS and also anxiety/depression in some people.

I would rather not take it but have found it helps my gut symptoms, however, period of nausea, gut upset in first few weeks of taking it are known side effects.Antibiotics also upset my gut & try to avoid. So sorry to hear you are suffering,it is awful to have multiple issues especially severe nausea, diarrhoea.Hopefully lowering the dose of Sertraline may help if you are just starting to take them, if you have been persevering for a while may not be for you, however, when increasing, decreasing dose it has to be done gradually so with doctor's guidance so hoping this helps. What a pity you had to take both tablets with those side effects together but hoping symptoms ease soon.

yahoo you finally sound like i do, i react to MOST medication! i read your post and a word stood out SERTRALINE - again, what is the matter with doctors i have problems swallowing tablets, with the ingredients and the principle. why put £ into glaxo-smithkilne's grimey hands? i had severe depression last year and even wanted to end my life. answer off my doctors? go on to sertraline. i said no. i have now discovered i have coeliac disease which causes lots of different problems. my health is now picking up. cut your silly antibiotic, rake imodium and charcoak to bung you up, try bland easily digestable fluid for diarrhoea and fluid replacements salts, try ginger for the sickness and good luck with it all!
