Increasing from 20mg to 30mg - tell me it gets better? :)

Hi everyone (long post)

5 years ago, I started having terrible anxiety and horrible panic attacks - went to see my doctor and was prescribed 20mg Citalopram to help.  I'm happy to report that Citalopram worked 11/10 for me and I was able to feel well and happy again.  My only regret is not getting into therapy to address underlying issues.

However, about one month ago, I experienced what felt like my first panic attack after YEARS of not experiencing one.  Throughout the past month, my anxiety came back and I quickly realized I would need to do something again for it.

Last week Wednesday, went to see my GP again, and she prescribed me to up my dose from 20mg to 30mg and also set me up to finally get in some counseling.  I was worried about increasing because I assumed I would most likely experience side effects, but also knew how effect this drug was for me.

Well - I'm on day 5 now and I can say that the side effects have been pretty horrible.  I must have completely forgotten or blocked that part out 5 years ago.  I'd say the worst side effect has to be the increased anxiety - I'm already highly anxious/panic-y and then the increase is making it worse, lol.  It seems that after dinner/at night is when I'm at my most positive and calm.

I'm guessing that the increase of 20mg to 30mg and the resulting side effects are normal?  By the end of this week, should some of the side effects be starting to lessen?

Yes that initial side effects are horrendous I thought I was going crazy! You will probably find counselling super helpful or at least I did. Meds are great, but once you tackle some of those underlying causes of your anxiety you may eventually be able to be med free. I'm on week 8 and 2 weeks ago increased to 30 and finally feeling good! Hang in there what your going through is totally normal it will pass!

I was on 10 mg for three months when my Psychiatrist increased my dosage to 20 for a week and then up to 30 where I am now. Anxiety amplified with those increaes. It’s now leveled off and am feeling a whole lot better. Just give it time, whatever it takes to get the relief you are hoping for. It will come. Magnesium Glycinate can be helpful for anxiety and heart palpitations

It’s been around three weeks since I upped my dose from 20 to 30. Honestly, the side effect that was most prominent was nagging anxiety for which I take Ativan periodically. I admit to taking Alprazolam also for break through anxiety. I now go longer without the need for benzos than even a week ago. I am also on Mirtazapine 30 mgs at night to sleep and, apparently could be beneficial for depression at that dosage. I am feelling a lot better now that I am settled at those dosages. I truly believe I have even more to look forward to in the coming weeks and even months. I am willing to go the distance and achieve my goal of virtually depression and anxiety free for once in my life. I hope you do to.
