Ioosing the plot

Hi all. Not sure if anyone can relate to this but a few weeks ago I had what seems to be a panic attack cooking Christmas dinner of all days... Out the blue, no stress and wonderful morning. Yes I had a very heavy cold but this came out of nowhere!

Since I have felt extreme anxiety. I have had further panic attacks which landed me in A&E Tuesday night.

It's either panic and anxiety that's causing these horrific symptoms or something is wrong that's causing the anxiety and panic as my head is in the best place it has ever been!

I do have a stressful job but its been he same for years and I also feel In control so why is this happening to me now 😭

Got prescribed fluoxetine 20mg a day and diazepam to take my anxiety down as I fell it 24/7 at the minute to the point I can't even work or drive!

I had to take diazepam for the first time yesterday and panicked about that. Everytime I take it it induces panic.

It's a viscous circle as I panic about what has caused all this and want to know but can't work it out.

Anyone else had it out the blue but loving life????

I've had a similar experience but with depression. Was due to go on an amazing holiday and really looking forward to it then the day before suddenly, and very unexpectedly, had all the bleakness of depression and anxiety and panic.  No idea why.  I struggled through that holiday and cant believe I got on the plane to be honest.... When I got home I went straight back on anti-depressants but also had cognitive behaviourhal therapy which really, really helped me.  It gave me techniques to bat away negative thinking before they take a firm hold and if they do then you also learn how to analyse and defuse those thoughts.  Its takes time and not a quick miracle fix but if I can do it for 5 minutes in a day at least then thats 5 minutes I'm not being so negative. I still get anxiety problems but CBT helps me keep it in check and carry on with a normal(ish!), happy life.

With your experience at christmas - I bet you aren't alone.  Christmas is fantastically stressful even if you dont think it is.  Shopping, planning, partying and doing the dinner (big respect to you!) isn't an every day occurence plus with a cold I expect you were more run down than you thought.  With the anti-depressants they can take a day or two to settle down and start doing their thing.  I wish the doctors told us more about what to expect because it can be terrifying and thats not an additional feeling you need at this time.  I certainly feel more odd for a day or two with antidepressants but have never taken diazepam.  If its still bad after a few days maybe phone the docs and check.

I feel for you - its a scary place but you're on the road to recovery and each day is a step closer to being well.  I was going to say a step closer to being normal but what is normal?!!!  Take care of yourself.

      Thank you xxx

It is scary. Took diazepam after the hospital episode only 2mg 10am Wednesday, 2mg 8:30pm and 5:30am... Nothing since yesterday morning. Had anxiety but refraining from taking diazepam if I can.

Taken 2 days of fluoxetine and hope to go back to work Monday x

Yes it can just occur. You were sick with a cold though and wonder if you were taking decongestants which are stimulants which can teigger an anxiiety attack. You dont mention your age is peri menapause possible here? See an endocrinologist ..for everyone its the best place to start if around 35

      Hi Lisa

Thank you. I was taking decongestants! And stopped when I read it can cause panic attacks and anxiety. I also cut out caffine.

I am 37 and had a full hystorectomy Aug 2014 and on HRT2mg every day since sad

Got bloods and ECG booked for investigation next week.

Armed with diazepam but not taking it routinely as the dr said... One 2mg tablet knocked me out as never taken it before !

Feeling much better today but not done a thing. Off work and it's poop.

Hope to go in Monday as I have a good team to support me
