Is this genital herpes?

This is completely and utterly embarrassing, but i have attached a photo. I have been with the same sex partner for two and a half years. About 5 days ago I assumed I had a nasty UTI because it has hurt incredibly bad to pee, so I started on antibiotics and AZO. A few days later I developed a couple "sores", I put it off immediately, assuming that I had maybe just irritated my skin and some ingrown hairs from excessive wiping due to the UTI. Then the sores become more like "open", and this is when I realized that earlier in the week my boyfriend had pointed out he had what seemed to look like a popped zit on the shaft of his penis. We thought it was weird, I told him we should take care of it, and that was that. We are now realizing our spots look the same, and are mortified and worried. DO we have herpes? How did we get it!?
I WILL be seeing a medical professional, but the anxiousness is killing me, I need to know. I am already absolutely torn up inside with just the thought of knowing I may have developed something that will stick with me for the rest of my life at such a young age.

hey hannah, first off it will be fine. in my opinion it does look like herpes and your description also matches typical symptoms. If your boyfriend also has the same kind of reactions and such it most likely is leaning towards herpes. in my opinion I would get a few things done. First a swab as soon as possible because if the sores heal enough or fade then a culture swab would not be an option ( culture swabs are proven to be the most accurate ). secondly i would do a hsv blood test. im not sure where you live but in canada it cost $250 and most clinics advise against it because of the "inaccuracy"of the test. the blood test are "inaccurate" when the virus is new and multiplying, so try and do a blood test 3-6 months after you go to the doctor ( 6 months would be best ). That way you can get the most accurate result. I would also try and retrace my steps before this happened. ask friends or others who you have borrowed lip balm or anything that can come into direct contact with their lips or genital area. Its not the end of the world and you have someone that can be there with you so take some relief with that. keep this post up to date for others, and take care.

Thank you for your response. So you are saying that this could have come from something as simple as sharing lip balm or possibly even a drink with someone else? Right now the big question is how did this happen?

hi hannah, you can get herpes from oral sex so if you and your boyfriend have ever had a coldsore you couldve performed oral sex then the other partner wouldve caught it sexually. I hope that helps! Let us know your results wishing you all the luck

I was swabbed and tested, this came back positive as HSV-1.
