Not very helpful, I know, but the best thing is to get swabbed for herpes asap while the bumps are still fairly new. Once they start to heal, the swab test becomes less accurate. Before then, the swab test is generally better than the blood tests. Unfortunately herpes doesn't always look like classic herpes, which makes it hard to tell visually.

Usually the first is the worst. Some people never even get a first outbreak, however, and never do. If they never changed to open sores, no matter how tiny, then that's a good sign that it is hopefully something else. Do the IgG (not IgM) test for both herpes types in 3 months, even 2 months (not 100% conclusive then, but pretty much).
