Is this normal?

Hi, I'm 51yrs old, have started to miss a period here and there, including last month.  But have now been bleeding for over three weeks.  It was mostly brown in colour for first two weeks, but has now turned red.  It is still not too heavy but heavier than last two weeks.  I also pass quite a few clots.  Is this normal please?  Any advice greatly appreciated.

Hello. I am 47 and i was like that 3 years ago. I had irregular bleeding. heavy bleeding, light bleeding and spotting. Now i am having occasional spotting and in menopause i think. I am nearly 48. If you are having alot of bleeding make sure you eat plenty of iron rich foods! My blood varied. It was browny colour also red and also a bright pinky colour. I was told i had a fibroid but apparently this should shrink in the menopause. Make sure you look after yourself.

My first advice is always check with a doctor on it. However , yes heavy bleeding can happen ..I remember calling my doctor office one time because it had been going on for like a month and huge clots coming out...felt as if I was hemorrhaging! The RN asked if I had missed a few periods and I told her yes and she said that is what it is it's all those missed periods rolled up into one. Mine would always come at the worst timest too! I got so used to carrying around extra pads/ tampons..(which were a joke to wear) and even extra clothing....!! So on the side of caution just call your doctor and explain symptoms to confirm but yes this type of bleeding and clots happen in perimenoapuse ...good luck!

Hi Mami5, I personally did not go through that since my period just stopped due to treatments. However, I have heard from several women about how it was for them. It does not sound alarming, however, I would confirm that with your doctor though. I know the clots are normal, just confirm the length of time. It will be fine, best to you.

Hello, I am also 51 and my periods have quite iratic for a while. I have gone for a few months and had a period. I then went for 10 months without and had a period.

So this probably is normal, but if you are unsure then a visit to the doctors would be a good idea. x

Thank you all for your kind replies.  You have managed to put my mind at rest.  I'm going on holiday next week and really hope it will stop before then.  Don't think I'll be able to get an appointment with female doc before then, so I'll see how things go when I get back.

Thank you again, really do appreciate it

    Mami5 xx

I think it's best to see your doctor on this. It will good if they also test you to clear you off Ovarian cancer too because abnormal blood discharge and clots can be an early sign as this happened to my aunty recently and was diagnosed of early.

Thank you ladies.  Been bleeding now for 4 weeks. It's getting heavier by the day.  Going on holiday on Tuesday so will not be able to see doc before then and there's no sign of it stopping either as it is getting worse.  Getting a bit worried about it now actually.
