Hi, I have just been diagnosed with overactive thyroid, and in a way feel pretty scared. To start with I thought it was my menopaus causing havoc, but then when I started getting shaky and anxious thought I had better get to the doctors. He has put me on propranolol 4 times a day and now on carbimazole 20mg once a day. I am waiting for an appointment with the specialist to see what happens next.
The overheating is hard to deal with, and night time is terrible, with bad dreams. I don't like the feeling of insecure, and feel like I am in a different world in my brain - I think this is because I don't really know anything about this.
I really don;t know what to expect. Just want to talk to someone who understands.
Thank you.

I was also in the same situation. But carbimazole worked fine, wasn't on anything else. It took a month or so to settle in and then was reduced after a while. Just think positive and keep doing things. Think of it as a phase. Time to learn new things, keep up the exercise and most importantly breathing exercise to reduce anxiety and stress. I know its easy to talk after its over but it does settle. Good luck

Hi I am on Propranel 3 times a day and also 40mg carbimazole , I was told menapause and back problems and nerves for 7 + years then after putting on weight and heart throught the roof i had blood test and results sky high , overactive with weight gain , my thyroid is mimicing an underactive , crazy things in last few weeks , hair loss bad toenails , stomach feels tight and tence , pins and needles in leg ,pitted oedeama and bad sleep problems and short term memory loss etc ..BUT its all just starting to get better yesterday and today , and hopefully everyday,Im still awaiting to see a specialist and scan , but my advice is just keep calm and be kind to yourself if nothing feels like its improving in a few weeks see ur dr about uping your dose to 40 mg as i started on 20mg and no help at all ,but mine was high ,not sure if i have been of much help , but it will get better for all of us .

I've just been diagnosed with hyperthroidims as well. And I'm scared like you. I also so it was menopause as I'm 55 and could tell my body was changing. My periods were off whack....some were extremely long, and some were normal. But then I started with heart palpitations which I've never had, followed by anxiety. Ended up in the ER in Santa Fe NM and discovered I had hyperthrodism. I hope my throid is just inflamed from a virus and this will all be over soon. I'm on medication for it. I pray for all of us with hyperthroidism that we will all be blessed and cured.....Peace and Love To All

Thank you everyone for your replies. I feel for all of us. Send best wishes to you all.
Well I have my specialist appointment, but not for about 5 weeks time - it was the first appointment I could get. I have put in for a call from my doctor today, because over the last couple of days I seem to have been getting worse. The overheating is just crazy, and now today I am all shaky again and feel like I did before I went on the tablets. Should this really happen? I didn't think I would be getting worse.
Oh well, see what the doctor says when he phones.
hugs to you all.

Molis...I had all those synptoms and more! My dr misdiagnosed me back in January as being hypothyroid and was put on synthroid (.150mcg)....May I started to feel scared for no reason...my heart was pounding out of my chest...shaking uncontrollably...went to urgent care as my dr had no appts....he did bloodwork thinking I needed my synthroid reduced. Next morning he calls to tell me to skip my dose of synthroid for the day and he talked to my dr and my dr was going to call me. My dr calls an hour later to tell me she misdiagnosed me. All this time since january I was HYPERTHYROID not hypothyroid AND taking synthroid! I knew something had to be wrong because I felt just awful! Next day I landed in hosp with heart rate of 167...blood pressure 182/102...shaking all over....ER Dr told me I got there just in time as I was heading into a thyroid storm! Just mindblowing!! I understand how you feel! PLEASE when you go to dr get a copy of your labs!!!!! I didn't unfortunately and am now 3 weeks post op total thyroidectomy as graves disease was playing havoc with me! Be persistent and DON'T ignore any of your symptoms even if it seems it's not related and be persistent with your dr. It's no joke dealing with thyroid issues whether hyper or hypo...amazing what it controls! The best of luck to you! Don't let my story scare you...I simply can't mention enough....get copies of labs!!
