Just left my Primary Care Doc. Feeling even more hopeless....

Not sure where to turn now. My constipation, stomach acid, and bloating has become so severe that I am starting to feel major bouts of anxiety, mainly comes from the pain in my chest area. So I put everything out there today and told my doc that I think I have a hiatal hernia or something along those lines and because I had chest X-rays he said that the chest X-rays would've showed that. When I researched online I understand that an endoscopy is what reveals the hiatal hernia so now I'm confused. But my doc said that my colonoscopy was normal I also did a barium swallow 2 years back which showed normal. A ct scan of my abdomen which also turned up normal. I've been tested from everything like hepatitis A and B to HIV and it's all negative. But for me the pain is only getting worse. I've never experienced this uncomfortable reflux feeling so high up in my chest. it triggers asthmaand severe pain so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. Blood pressure was high and my body was cold and sweaty. X-rays revealed gas bubbles under my heart...also now I've noticed my circulation seems to be declining as my left hand and right leg up to my knees at times go Completely numb and swells when Im in certain positions for extended periods of time...these are new symptoms but my doc said constipation and blood circulation are not related. Not to mention I also have high cholesterol. I have actually flipped myself upside down in order to expel some of this gas as well...Can anyone. please help as I feel I am declining significantly in health. Any solutions I'm willing to take....

These tests will only show up damage to the structure of your body. They will not show up whether or not your gut flora is right and in most cases like this that is the problem.

In which case you stop having alcohol, sugar, bread, white flour, refined foods, processed foods, cut down on or cut out fruit, increase vegetables, especially green, make sure you have some onion in your diet regularly, cut down on carbohydrates and proteins, themore you cut these out the better, and take a live probiotic and/or live yoghurt - the proper live yoghurt not the commercialised one with fruit and sugar where the bacteria are dead. Then give it about three months and you will feel a lot better.

I have cut a lot of those things out of my diet. I am done with red meat and will start juicing. I now eat only home cooked meals,  i eat a lot of spinach based dishes also Yogurt with granola but the reflux Is just too extreme every time I stand up right for to long. It's as if everything continuously comes up. And nothing wants to go down. Any suggestions on what test I could suggest they give me? Thanks for the reply by the way.

I would have thought the best move at this point would be to request a referral to a gastroenterologist to review the intensification of your reflux, bloating and other gastric symptoms. Asthma can also be a reflux related symptom.

Being worried about these symptoms will only add to your reflux and other gastric symptoms. My feeling is that you will continue to feel anxious until you have had an endoscopy.

I would advise against turning yourself upside down until you know if you have a hiatus hernia or not, or other weakness in the lower oesophageal sphincter.

Good luck with asking the GP.

Thanks for the reply Nfa, I have an appointment with gastro in 3 weeks and have started a video diary to show the docs exactly my daily routine. I do agree that the worrying only makes my symptoms worse but ever since my acid reflux has gotten worse i have also noticed that it makes me more anxious and worried. Some thing about a feeling there is acid in the chest area around the heart makes me anxious and also raises my blood pressure tremendously. But we will see what happens when I see my gastroenrologist. Thanks for the reply.

Glad you have an appointment, and hope the specialist will arrange an endoscopy, and possibly tests to check the functioning of your lower oesophageal sphincter, and a 24 hour test which will record the number of acid and non-acidic reflux "episodes".

I quite agree that it is the gastric condition/relux that causes the anxiety rather than anxiety itself being the cause of the reflux and other unpleasant, and worrying symptoms. How could one not be worrried by the awful symptoms we get with this revolting condition?

I know it is not always easy to be assertive with doctors, but suggest that you let the consultant know that you are unlikely to lower your concerns unless you have an endoscopy.

Do let the forum know how your appointment goes.

      Best regards, nfa
