Just started on Mirtazapine 15mg and want to get off...Help please!

Hi all, I'm a newbie here and I wanted to get some advice, because I'm not getting much help from the medical profession, if you know what I mean. I have just started on Mirtazapine, 15mg, and I have had 6 doses. I want to get off this drug as soon as possible. What would you consider to be the best course of action from here? Many thanks in anticipation.

hello, why do you want to come off it so quickly? it does take a couple of weeks to see and feel different. why were you prescribed them to begin with if you dont mind me asking?

Hi Georgia, thank you for your reply. They were prescribed for depression and anxiety, but the main reason for me was help with insomnia. The reason I want to stop is because I've seen a lot of bad reports of withdrawal symptoms and I would like to avoid that if at all possible. This is my first experience of medication of this type so I'm relying on the experience of others.

personally, i dont think anything will happen if yku stop now given you have only taken a few but i would maybe try and get a telephone appt with doc. i was on them for 4 months and stopped cold turkey about 6 weeks ago, first two weeks were horrendous but i am back to myself now!

Thanks Georgia, I did speak to my GP and she said to just stop but I wasn't sure after some of what I've read.

Everyone is different but I can share my experience. I took Mirtazapine for a little over two weeks. I was taking 10mg. I had difficult sleep side effects (which are not common). My doctor told me just to stop taking it. I thought he was crazy after a lot of the reviews I read. I went ahead and stopped taking it. I did not have any issues.

Thanks Meredith. That was the advice from my GP as well. It didn't sound right to me either after what I've read.

6 doses i.e. 6 days - I think you'll be fine to stop but just keep an eye out for any odd symptoms and relax because no matter what happens they'll be a way to help 😃

Thanks Charlie, I've since had to take another last night and I've got something important to do in a few days time so I may have to take a few more and then stop. Hopefully all will be well.

Dropping to 7.5mg (or even smaller - something around 2mg still knocked me out sleep-wise!) is another option, it'll still have the sedating effect. Obviously I recommend informing your doctor whatever you decide 😃
(just realised I wrote "they'll" in my previous response when I meant "there'll" - can I blame autocorrect? 😉)
