Knee pain and swelling

Posted , 4 users are following.

I had an MRI done which showed I had "a subtle tear" in the back of my right knee.  I have been to 3 doctors and still do not know how to proceed.

My knee is swollen and stiff.  I have been to PT on and off.  'the doctors have suggest PRP, cortisone shot, Gel shots or just plain taking Advil.

I have been doing Aqua aerobics.  I am a very active person but the  pain has slowed me down.  It is painful when I squat and have to get up.  I am scared to do too much physical exertion in order not to make the situation worse, but it is making me sad.  I love to walk but I have stopped doing it.

I don't know how to proceed as the doctors have not given me a definitive idea how to proceed.

Any feedback will be appreciated

Hiya, according to Chico, an mri doesn't always show a true reflection of what is going on. I would ask for an x-ray

I meant to say can anyone recommend a good orthopedic surgeon to do the PRP procedure in Tampa

Hi Louise.  Thanks for the email.  I first had an x-ray and everything showed that all was fine.  Then I had an MRI and that is when the doctor found a "subtle tear in the back of the Knee".  As I said before, I am trying to heal the problem with PT and aqua aerobics.  Katie

    Hi Katie195320519,

I had meniscus tear in year 2013 on my left knee which causes my leg to be quite stiff and painful. Did MRI SCAN and normal X Ray to confirm. Dr suggested to do keyhole surgery but I asked for other alternatives which was PRP jab. Did PRP jab in 2015 and Dr did say that PRP won’t cured your meniscus. Till now so far so good. Do give it a try . Good luck . (Am 56 very active person but I don’t do strenuous exercise like jogging n tracking ).

      Hi Katie 195320519,

I had PRP jab once only and I do take Glucosamine supplements too.  I was doing ok with the jab till I followed my frens for 2 times of  tracking . Pain n stiffness came back again. Was very worried. Went back to see Dr. Gave me pain killer and muscle relaxant . It’s help quite abit and I refrained from strenuous exercise. Did only brisk walking and cycling. Took about 5 months to get back to my normal lifestyle. I believe our body can heal by itself and it’s just a matter of time. How old are you? Sorry for late reply. Am from Malaysia. Good luck Katie🤗

I am 64.  Walk a lot and exercise.  I started doing Zumba which was fun and good exercise and that is when I injured  myself and tore a meniscus.

      Hi Katie

You are still young . Go for PRP jab first. Rest and do ICE pack treatment to ease the inflammation. If PRP doesn’t work for you later you can do the keyhole surgery. Take one step at the time . Good luck 🤗

I had a bucket handle tear of the inner washer cartilage. Had it removed as pain was so bad at back of knee and knee wouldn’t bend properly. For me the injections didn’t work. Good luck

Find a SPORTS ortho group associated with your local pro/college teams.  They will know what to do.

Cortisone is temporary but will help with the short-term pain and inflammation.  Gel is used when there's a bone-on-bone situation.  Any kind of small tear MAY heal over time IF you eliminate the exercising that caused it...could take months.  Yes, scoping is the surgical fix to a tear.  Quick and simple with a fast recovery (had 4 of them).  See a sports ortho.

Thanks very much for the reply.  I am glad you are telling me not to do the Gel and the cortisone.  I don't want a temporary fix.  I have heard a lot of good reviews about a Dr. in Clearwater.

"Podiatrist in Clearwater, Florida that specializes in Sports Medicine and treating foot and lower extremity injuries."

This guy is a Podiatrist.  does he qualify?

Will continue looking for a surgeon.  In the meantime, will do PT and water aerobics.  Thanks.  Katie

Like I said...  Find a sports ortho group that works for your local sports teams.  Best guys for your problem...
