Knee troubles for 2 years now

Evening,

To cut a long story short I had a torn meniscus whilst playing football in 2015. I ended up having surgery to repair the knee.

Months went by and I was in the gym building it back up to full strength how ever it always seemed as though sometching else was up with it? My knee clicks constantly and when I move it around I can feel all sorts of cracks going off inside which feel uncomfortable and sometimes painful.

ive been back to the hospital where I had an MRI scan. The scans came back all fine and the consultant said there was no further damage or action wasn't needed to be taken. He said I'd not left it to heal long enough.

i wanted a second opinion and so was referred to a different hospital. Again I had another MRI and yet again it came back fine, however he did note there were some markings on part of my knee itself but wasn't said it was bruising. He gave me a couple of shots of steroids and said to leave it for now.

A few weeks passed and I had the chance to play football with my mates. I managed to get through 60 minutes of low intensity football however the next day my knee was in agony. It actually took about 8 weeks to stop hurting from that.

Before playing football I was able to go out and run several miles no problem however now I keep getting a pain on the outside of my knee. The past 3 attempts at running I've gone no further than 200 yards as I could feel it hurting again.

Im at a loss as to what I should do now. Originally I was supposed to have the routine operation and within 3 months I'd be back doing what I used to. I fact I've had to retire from sport near enough. It's really getting my down and have had little help from anyone with this.

Anyone else had the same symptoms as me or can anyone give me some advice.

thanks

Way back when...I played hockey for 45 years...I had a problem with one knee.  MRI was "inconclusive".  So the doc did a scoping and found that I had ripped my femoral condyle cartilage completely off.  Three more times (two MRIs each side total)...all inconclusive.  All four times, the surgeon did the scoping and found/repaired two femoral condyles and two menisci each side.

MRIs don't always tell the story.  Sometimes, the surgeon HAS TO go in to find and fix the problem.  Get it scoped.  Steroid shots are a temporary fix.  Find the real cause and get it done.

Even a MRI doesn't show everything could be wrong in your knee. Mine was doing that same thing and doc went back in. He didn't rely on the MRI to show him everything. He could hear and feel what I was explaining to him. There was pieces stuck in the joint and a tear the MRI did not show. He also had to clean off the under side of my knee cap. He retired a couple years ago.

Are you in a position to get a second opinion? I've always found a 2nd set of eyes to be important. I go to a teaching hospital and a situation like this becomes a team diagnosis and not a one man opinion.

    Where do you live?

There is an excellent orthopaedic surgeon in Hereford Mr Matthew Oakley. He did my knee replacement 5 years ago and I would recommend him to anyone.

Also have you been to a physiotherapist?

I live in Wales and here you can refer yourself for physio without having to see a doctor first.

    Hope this helps.

Take care and keep in touch

Hi there, you've been given really good advice.

THEonly thing I would suggest is to see a sports injury specialist, someone who is trained to examine the results of sporting injuries which can be altogether different from say the injury from a fall or accident. Orthopods are extremely skilled but you need the eyes & ears of a sport injury specialist who understands not just your injury but your need to compete!

Ask you GP for a referral to a sports injury specialist, you will prob have to pay privately but it will be worth it to find an answer! If you go on your doc's recommendation it's better. They usually know, my GP sent me off to someone in 1992 for Achilles problems! Cost me but was worth it!

ABSOLUTELY!!!  Find the ortho group that handles your local college and professional sports teams.  They are the REAL experts in this stuff!!!

as always, good advice "commander". i think i should do as you suggested, its been a year now and my bend is still not great.  everytime i walk for 30 minutes or go on stationary bike for 30 minutes, knee hurts by end of day.  i cancelled my yearly appt. last month, have to find the inner strength again to call either my ortho who originally did the surgery or second opinion surgeon.  can i ask, how to go about finding a ortho group that handles my local college?  just call every ortho on my plan?? i dont know.  at least i can get around, drive, go out etc etc.  but i know, in my heart, deep down, this knee is just not right.  soooo tired of docs and hosptals, i know "get a better attitude" yup!?

hope all is well w/u, havent been here in a while, life!?

      best, kathy p
