I'd very much appreciate feedback from anyone who has had the above procedure for GERD.
My story is this; I'd never really suffered with heartburn or acid until a particularly stressful period about six years ago, which I believe caused my hiatus hernia (diagonsed by a endoscopy).
I eat a healthy, balanced diet and exercise - a lot, but, probably do to my inability to properly manage stress, and despite 20-40mg of Omeprozole per day, it continuted to worsen.
I had heard some worrying things about the Nissen Fundoplication procedure, but eventually pushed for it as I saw it as the only sensible long-term route. I didn't want to take mediation everyday indefinately and definately didn't want to develop Barretts.
I had the procedure three weeks ago and all went well with no complications. Sadly, though, I'm still getting acid. I've been feeling acid at the back of my throught for so long that I was unsure at first if I was imagining it. So put the sore throat down to the op, but I stopped taking Omeprazole four days ago and today, very disapointingly, had to take one - and again this evening, another.
Please, please tell me it will settle down?

Ho Deb
I had my surgery June last year.
I had been suffering basically all my life with some form of acid or reflux, I had been taking omeprazole for about ten years then went onto Nexium along with copious amounts of gaviscon advance and Ranitadine still with symptoms.
I pushed for the surgery but was scared too that it might not work.
I had a hiatus hernia too.
The surgeon did a 270 degree wrap, since then I have had a few Ranitadine while my new stomach was settling in.
I get a little bit of phlegm but nothing on the scale of before the op.
I still try and eat slowly and small portions, all in all I'm glad I did it, like you I was worried about getting barrets, also as the consultant said had quite a lot of acid coming up it could start getting into my lungs and voicebox and cause bigger problems, also long term taking of ppi medication isn't good..
Best of luck with your recovery..
Regards
Margaret
