Hi,
It takes quite a few weeks for the medicine to start working and you will usually get side effects for the first few weeks like feeling anxious, tearful, headache, upset tummy etc. These side effects are all perfectly normal and will wear off after a while. You have to give the medicine time to work, it could be several weeks until you feel better so don't be discouraged or feel that it isn't working because it will be working, just very slowly. I have been on citalopram for nearly 5 months now and I'm still not completely cured, but I am a LOT better than I was before I started. Just have faith in the medicine, and be patient.

It will take a few weeks I'm afraid, but you'll probably get unpleasant side effects because you are taking a medics your body doesn't like at first. These will go away, and you will probably see that your sleeping and appetite improve.......and that's when you know the medicine is starting to work for you. Good luck, ask as many questions as you need to

Many people insist that you keep trying.
I will NOT do that.
I am 52...I have taken many antidepressents and some just aren't for me.
I always take them and give them a chance when they are prescribed. But if they make me feel sick...I am not willing to continue with something that makes me feel sick.
I was told by my Dr. typical adverse symptoms usually don't last more than 2 weeks. So depending on how uncomfortable symptoms are determines if I continue taking prescribed medication.
Various times they were correct....2 weeks all symptoms passed. Actually Citalopram symptoms only lasted 1 week for me and I took them for 8 years.
If I were you...I would think I had taken them LONG ENOUGH....decided I don't want to feel uncomfortable anymore and ask for a change!

Hi I've been on 20mg citalopram for 19 days now for severe anxiety and just as with all srris they do make you feel worse to begin with. I'm suffering terrible nausea but I'm sticking with it because I know soon the drugs will start to kick in and the side effects will subside.
Talk to your GP but they are likely to say that you need to give it 4 weeks or so to see if they are helping.
It is so hard but every day is a step closer to recovery - that's what I keep telling myself.
Stay strong xx
