Left THR tomorrow 21 March

I had my right THR in December 2013 after a few years of pain and then 8 months of extreme pain.  By the time I saw the surgeon in 2013 I was on a walking stick etcetc.  He said when did i want the op?? I said last week.  He said i can do it in 2 weeks.  So in those two weeks I closed my dance studio ( I hadn't been able to teach for 4 months and getting up the stairs to the studio was just awful), sold my business and went off to have my hip done.  This time I KNEW what the pain was when my left hip started playing up so I headed off to my sports Dr and then my surgeon.  Together we were able to agree a date that fitted in.  This time I'm not on a walking stick, I taught dance up until last Tuesday.  I keep getting told you can't compare this operation with the first one, Don't compare your rehab this time with last time.  And while i do get that - its the other side - I've probably used the left muscles differently, I'm older etcetc.  I still think this one should be about the same and I should have an even better time since I know more.  What is other peoples experiences??  Are both sides widely different???

Hi.  After my first hip I wasn't sure what could be possible.  I was told it could take 2 years before I could.  However my rehab was great and I went back to dance (I teach Ballroom Classical Sequence New Vogue and Latin American) in May - 6 months. I would have gone back earlier but my scar wasn't healing and kept infecting. I didn't teach though I went and prepared for my Fellowship qualification in Classical Sequence with my Coach.  So that meant I wasn't being leaned on by beginner men, or leading beginner women .  I was back teaching - just a few hrs a week by the July.  And it ramped up from there.  This time I have been told I should be able to return to teaching in May.  I have my couples and singles all prepared. So we should compare notes.

Yes I found latin - and salsa quite hard early on - because of the hip action - and wearing high heels.  Was fun BUT i had to think about how far I could go.  My sports Dr told me I was 80% recovered at 6 months after the operation smile

80% seems to line up with the 'dislocation risk' graph that i recreated for my website in the 'Hospital Recovery' page.

So at ten weeks, i'm about 25% recovered now, and 50% comes at 16 weeks

My surgeon told me that I would not be completely healed until twelve months. But surely people heal at different rates. Don't they? Maybe just a guideline

everything is approximate, but 12 months seems to be the 'completely healed' time usually quoted.

    Hi

I had a total LHR nine weeks ago and am due for a second op in September. Both hips were badly affected with osteoarthritis with my left slightly worse. I am already in a great deal of pain and using a cane. Whilst I can't answer your question, I would also like to hear from anyone in a similar situation.

I worked within the legal system but dance has always been my passion. I have a gold medal in line dancing and I also have a brand new pair of dancing shoes that I have yet to wear; to dance again would be my dream come true

    Please keep me updated.

    Thank you

I was back competing in ProAm events after the first replacement - AND I intend to dance ProAm later this year with one of my ladies.  Lets keep in touch - I'd be interested in your progression BACK to dance

That would be amazing. Thank you so much.

I keep looking at my dance shoes and thinking "one day" but I need to be pragmatic and I know it is unlikely to be this year. In the interim I attend aqua aerobics classes.

I had my first 30th June 15 and second on 12th Feb 16. They have been slightly different but only in as much that I am more confident. I know not to push it too hard and to rest up often. I have also rested more this time and progress has been quicker.
