Leg giving way 7 years after THR

I had a THR in 2010 which though deemed a "success" by the surgeon, I did not feel the same way and have had discomfort on a daily basis ever since. I do exercise e.g. walking, swimming, gym (no running but do cycle), exercises in the water e.g. swinging backwards and forwards, side to side and doing a "figure of 8" with leg. These past 2 weeks my leg has felt it will give way when stepping up the kerb, stairs etc with similar feeling of weakness in that knee and pain hip after a long walk. Is the THR failing? Have I exercised too much e.g. wrong exercises i.e. the "figure of 8" in the water? I had an x-ray on knee of that leg 3 weeks ago and found mild athritis and another x-ray on hip which consultant said looked fine. All I can think is that I have damaged the hip with too much or wrong exercise and the hip is now failing. Ironically, if I do no exercise for more than a week, my hip becomes stiff and painful anyway. Anyone with similar problems at all? Off to GP tomorrow as now worried.

I am not sure what to tell you as i am really not an expert ... I would think that the exercises would be good - you have done them for so many years - please come back here and let us know what your doctor told you and how you are getting on ...Big warm hug renee

Hi Patti have you maybe overdone it the last few weeks, its good xray shows hips OK but maybe its muscular not bone, I'm thinking cut back and ice for a few days and pain meds and see how it goes, was that your Dr who said its OK or an orthopedic consultant, drs are not specialists in Amy field but radiologist should see a problem, as for an MRI so they can look at the soft tissue

Hi Alexandria - yes it was a specialist orthopaedic consultant but specialising in knees as that was why I went to see him but he wanted to be sure by an xray of the hip that the knee pain was not being caused by anything wrong with the hip and it was that xray of the hip which he said was fine. You could well be correct on overdoing the exercise and hopefully when I see my GP this afternoon he will say the same thing. In the meantime, I've made an appointment to see Sarah Muirhead Alwood at the Princess Grace Hospital on 1 Feb in case my GP thinks there could well be a problem with the hip after all. Another aggravating factor is that I sustained a lower back injury in 2007 and it was the surgeon I saw then who carried out the THR in 2010 who advised on that injury so there is also the possibility of the back injury causing referred pain to the hip. I did not realise in 2010 of the importance of checking out the experience and reputation of a THR surgeon to do the procedure and went with this predominantly back consultant surgeon who advised having the THR. Thank you very much for your reply and hopefully all will be well!
