Hi. Bit of a long one .
About 8 years ago I started with a deep pain inside my foot. So deep I couldn't feel it when I pressed on the area. Outside of my foot under my ankle bone and towards to top.
When it flairs up, just putting my foot on the floor slightly while walking makes it give out and I nearly fall over. So now my stride is short. My ankle and foot now are always stiff. Uneaven ground is a nightmare to walk on.
Over time it's changed. It aches nearly all the time. And pretty much everyone has said I walk with a slight limp or a very noticble one at times.
2 weeks ago I got my bad foot stuck in mud. It was deep so I needed some force to get it out. Ouch! It wasn't sprained. Hardly any swelling. Didn't go over on it. But the stiffness was impossible. And the burning at night would wake me up. I've not had that before.
I ended up needing to see a doctor. He pressed on something where the pain has been....... And instead of it being so deep pressing causes no pain. It really hurt. He did stretched and moved my foot around and said it's limited to what it can do . And thinks my repeated spraining years ago has caused allot of problems. He also noted how my other foot was starting to show signs of whatever it is too.... I sprained that one a.few times this past 5 years. Always guarding the bad foot so that one has copped it too.
He's put me in a brace and cruches and wants me to see a surgon.
Any idea what this is. And what they will do ?
I know it seems silly to wait 8 years before sorting out my pain. I just thought if I ignored it , it would go away. I guess I was wrong.

Hi Max,
Thanks for your story, and I am hoping this all ends well for you. Eight years is a long time to bear chronic ankle problems.
I don't think it is too late to do something about it. My guess is you are suffering from chronic ankle instability (from previous ankle compromises from sprains and what have you) which has caused some deep-seated soft tissue inflammation and damage (who knows what could be affected-- there is a ton of complicated soft tissue of all kinds in and around ankle).
If you see a surgeon they will likely find a reason to want to operate. Many patients jump at the chance to undergo surgery hoping it will be a quick fix to their woes.
I would advise finding a conservative physician that will only operate as a last resort-- after all other measures utterly fail.
Good luck.

Thank you for your reply. I'm in the UK so they don't like to operate unless things can't be fixed. The first guy I saw was pretty worried. And kept shaking his head saying how have you put up with this for so long. Apparently horse owners are the worst for leaving things for so long things are extreme and make treatment difficult..... I cant disagree lol.
I'm hoping they find out everything that's wrong so we can talk honestly about the best outcome.
I went brwcr free arou f the house for a couple of hours today. And I'm.so feeling it now. I am rubbish at this rest thing. Truly rubbish.
I just don't understand why they say not to even dress a sprained ankle . And crack on as soon as possible. When this can be the outcome.

Had an x ray yesterday. The surgon can see 3 bone cysts in one of my ankle bones. Likely to be caused by damage to the cartilage on one of my many sprains.
He says could be bones overlapping but its very unlikely. And because he can clearly see them on the x ray they must be large.
Awaiting an mri. And he's treating the symptoms by keeping me in the boot.
I'm not sure really what this means . He mentioned injections in the bone. Or draining them and putting something in to fill them. Or possible fusion of the ankle.
Each sounds pretty unpleasant .
