Hi Teresa, i'm apparently having my op on Mon 13th April (i won't believe it though until i wake up in recovery as been cancelled 4 times now) I'm having TAH but want to keep my ovaries.

I think i'm quite lucky in my outlook as i'm not scared, worried or anything just want someone to say its either happening or its not as have been living my life around maybes since early January.

I think i'm one of the lucky ones as i'm not in any pain but have a very large fibroid (which is no problem) and dysfunctional uterine bleeding (bleed heavily all the time) which is stopped by taking 3 Northisterine tablets a day (i hate taking any type of drugs so cannot wait for day i stop taking them), i'm actually looking forward to a couple of weeks off work and intend to make the most of it as will be going back 6 weeks after op, i'm sure this time will fly by.

Hi Neversataystill, firstly I hope that this time is THE time! Goodness you have been on a rollercoaster! Do you HAVE to go back to work at 6 weeks? Just asking as I am at 5 weeks now and I could not imagine being ready to go back anytime yet. And yes the time has flown! xx

Unless there are complications then yes i have to return after 6 weeks, i work for a council and they have had quite a few women have the op and i would say 90% of them have returned after 6 weeks so a precedent has been set, even my manager had the op 2 years ago and she was back after 6 weeks. If you require more time off you are visited at home by 2 managers and an occupational nurse to assess the situation. Thats another reason i'm a bit worried as i think my belly swelling won't have gone down and i won't fit in my uniform lol

Oh sweet, I've just replied to you on this subject on a different thread. I too work for local council and can honestly say they have been fantastic with me. More than once I've been told "Take as long as you need" I've had three home visits already, two with just my manager, mainly to offer support and see if I'm ok, almost like a social call! And another with two managers as a stage 1 sickness, but that again was just a formality and to offer futher support on a fomal basis.

You really should not be compared to anyone else with this op as it depends on type of procedure, age, post op problems etc etc on your recovery speed, every one is different. I would contact your union and put them in the picture just incase you need to call on them later on. Good luck xxx

I am quite lucky that my union rep is also my colleague/friend and she has offered to be with me every step of the way if my Manager and or HR cause problems. Work have been supportive in their own way but due to severe anemia last year cos of amount of blood i kept losing i had to have 2 months off so they are looking at my Bradford score (don't know if your work uses that as well?) I've only had 1 day off sick since April 14 and that 1 day put me well over my limit and has caused all the hassle as they say they cannot deviate from the procedures for one person whatever the circumstances as that isn't fair on others. I can understand their logic but if i'm not ready after 6 weeks i think they will have to just bear with me.

Although the staff nurse that did my last pre op assessment said based on my fitness levels, size and positive attitude that she would probably expect me to be back at work in 4 weeks (mainly seated job with no lifting) so perhaps the last 2 weeks will just be a holiday, i think not lol

Well good luck sweet. I'm not sure why your council don't seem to be able to judge each case on it's own merits and on your own history, that seems to be how it works for us. Stage 1 is a formality but from there onwards it is managers discretion. Don't get me wrong that doesn't mean you can get away with taking time off for no reason or that there is any kind of favouritism, it just seems sensible that a manager that is at the sharp end so to speak, actually knows the individual and the circumstances is actually able to have a huge input into how the sickness procedure is implemented. Fingers crossed for you xx

I can't believe what I'm hearing that's an awful way to be treated. Definitely get unions involved and go to appeal. I work for NHS and they also use Bradford score but sanctions wouldn't kick in until 4th episode of sickness in a 12 month period and even then it is down to manager to take the case on its own merits. Having a condition that leads to an operation and 6+ weeks off is NOT the same as someone having the same time off for a cold every 3rd Friday coz they want a long weekend! That's what the Bradford score was designed to stop I think. If it does get rediculous ask who regulates the hr dept as you wish to take it further via a full time official. Good luck but before anything concentrate on getting better xx
