Losing Weight Coming Off Mirtazapine

Has anyone else had a problem with weight loss when stopping Mirtazapine? I don't have an appetite, and feel sick at the stomach, and have lost 10 pounds. I am beginning to worry that it may be something else going on.

i was on MTZ forever it seemed. I do not know why I was even put on it. Maybe sleep issues. I don't suffer with depression. This drug sent me from a size 12 to an 18. I've never been big in my life. BUT I did not see the weight gain but other folk did. I just thought the clothes I bought were wrongly sized (in my dreams). It took others to point it out. When you look in the mirror, you don't really see yourself as you are. I have come down from a 45mg dose to a 3mg or less. ALL dependent on my cutting tool. Over 2 years since I had a word in my docs ear, I have lost 10kilos. It still hasn't all gone from my middle. But I'd not advise anyone to go on this pill. It is bad news. If you don't want to be sluggish in the morning and need 50 coffees to get you up and going, avoid it like the plague. Morning you will feel like you've been drinking all night. It's hangover effect is awful. Besides, it sends your LFT's up and your ....... coll - the thing you need statins for. Spell check isn't helping me. Because it is so hard to get off it is a good reason to not start it. To be honest, AD's don't work. There is not a magic pill... But the ramifications of this one are far worse than any other out there.

**yes i have lost weight but mostly what was gained when i started on the stuff over 10 years ago.I am itching and scratching all the time. it's horrible.

To stop the itching and scratching you need to take a second generation, none drowsy antihistamine like fexofenadine (eg, Allegra), loratadine (eg, Claritin and Alavert), or cetirizine (eg, Zyrtec).

DO NOT take a first generation antihistamine like Phenergan etc. Mirtazapine acts like a first generation antihistamine and you don't want to be going down that route again.

The second generation antihistamines don't cross the blood/brain barrier whereas Mirtazapine does. If you are coming off Mirtazapine you need to keep your brain as drug free as possible to give it a chance to revert back to normal functioning again.

You are losing weight because your H1 and 5-HT2c receptors are no longer blocked by the Mirtazapine. You have stomach troubles because the Mirtazapine is no longer blocking your H2 receptors. Yes Mirtazapine DOES block H2 receptors, but they don't tell you that. With your H2 receptors unblocked you will be getting acid rebound and possible acid reflux. Try low dose Ranitidine (Zantac) for your stomach troubles and gradually wean the dose down until you can get off the Ranitidine. Enjoy the weight loss, you will live longer.

yes i have lost 20 pounds but still not lost as much as I gained, I am only taking it every 6 or7 days now because of terrible itching which eventually sets my feet on fire.

If it were me I would take a non-drowsy antihistamine for the itching. Using Mirtazapine is like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

I did that and every time i never took one the crazy itching would start again .I took them for 3 months and still the itching is there .i am back on Mirtazapine 7 mg daily

my son is 38 has Down syndrome and I slowly took him off . but now he has lost weight .he was 95 pounds he is now 88. he still has an appetite . I'm starting to worry. should I put him back on it or how long will it take to get out of his system.

Try feeding him more carbohydrates like potato, rice, pasta and wholemeal bread to increase his weight. That way he won't suffer the Mirtazapine side effects. If he is Downs the last thing he wants is his H1s blocked by Mirtazapine causing him to be drowsy.

The simple way to control weight is by increasing or decreasing the ratio of carbohydrates in your diet. Eat less carbohydrates to lose weight and more to gain weight.

In my case, i did have to be weened off. Didn't take long, about 2 weeks only.

I've been off it for awhile now and no bloating, I've not been craving sugary foods like i was, and I've managed to lose a few pounds. I also was having a side effect of loose stools and when I stopped taking the Mirtazipine, that stopped as well.

      Mentally, I've adjusted fine.

So happy to be off the medication!

Hi all. Very new to these forum ways of communicating. I have been searching the web while having difficulty settling to sleep (rookie move on my phone in bed) but I'm keen to see how others have found coming off Mirtazapine. I have been on 45mg for the past 4 years? Never had an issue with it being on it and it did help my thoughts and just to think clearer. Post covid, it has been extremely hard for anyone to get drs appts/scrips etc. Mine had run out and the docs wouldn't allow for a script to be done without seeing the Dr. i have tried for the past 2 weeks for an appt and no luck. Three weeks without and my goodness. Cold turkey. This is now mu 3rd week. I've experienced lack of appetite, insomnia (sleeping 2-3 hours a night, broken), low mood and poor energy. I am enjoying the suppressed appetite but the rest is s**t. have always wanted to get of these antidepressants but not in this unplanned way. i hope you are all well and safe xx take it easy out there!!

i started in them only for anxiety and sleep problems. but i gained so much weight it then made me depressed... doctor told me my mental health was more important but id had issues with my weight all my life this made it worse. i suddenly stopped in lock down as i ran out of prescription and thought id be ok.... buf bang! one day i came over with the most depressing feelings ans thoughts ever! i sat in my car crying for hours and hours and wanted to kill myself.... i didnt know why i had all these thoughts going through my head! yes id had anxiety before but this was something i couldnt stop....... i had 3 children had home who needed ans depended on me as an only parent and i called and spoke to a lovely lady from samartitans who spoke to me and calmed me down.

when i got home i called my friend who is a mental health nurse ans told her how id just stopped and she explained how dangerous it was. she came by and gave me some mirtazapine and pheneghan to get to sleep and within the week i felt better. but i hated how i must now be reliant on this medication which i never in the first instant needed for depression yet now was depressed when i stopped it.

i spoke with a locum doctor a few weeks ago who said to wean off them and start fluoxatine. i have been stopping mirtazapine and thought i dont want to swap to another... if it will only be the same again.

i ordered some pheneghan sleeping aid in case i csnt sleep and i have the fluoxatine here that was prescribed but im hoping to just not go on them and see how i feel.
