Low estrogen on test but low progesterone symptoms?

Posted , 3 users are following.

I'm 32 and have had symptoms of low progesterone for a while. Spotting before period, zero libido, heavy periods with bad cramps that last for 7 days.

I was pretty sure that was the case but wanted to test to be sure, so I did a saliva test.

The test showed that I had extremely low estrogen (estradiol) - abnormally low for somebody who is not in menopause (which I'm not). My progesterone was low-normal.

I'm very confused about this as I don't have low estrogen symptoms (lack of period is one and I very much still get a period!)

Any advice would be amazing as I haven't been able to find anything online. Thanks!

Hi Gemma, have you seen your GP? You could ask for a referal to a specialised clinic.

No, I haven't. I feel that they would prob brush me off as saliva tests aren't really recognised and when I have complained of period/hormonal related problems in the past, I've been told that it's just part of being a woman... sad

Do you have something like a family planning clinic in your area.  They usually have someone who is very familiar with hormones.

Or a visit to a menopausal clinic for hormone information.  A referral to a gyneacologist, or a change of doctors.

Also, your levels vary according to the phase of the month you are in.  I hope someone more knowledgeable can help you.  I had to have a full hysterectomy at age 38 so all my knowledge relates to menopause.

One thing I ended up having was a prolactinoma, and even though I was using HRT, the prolactinoma was making that oestrogen ineffective and caused undiagnosed hormonal havoc for 6 years.
