Low Vit D makes you fat?

Oh would I like to believe this.  According to researchers at Aberdeen University lack of sunlight intefers with the hormone leptin which tells our brain that our stomach is full, so we feel compelled to eat more. The pituitary gland in the brain lacks stimulation and therefore the adopts survival tactics believing it is winter and makes us eat whatever is available and exercise less.  Low vit D means whatever vit D we have goes into fat stores and is not accessible.  Interesting don't you think fellow fibro folk.

All the more reason for us fibro folk to get vit D levels checked and corrected if necessary.    Have a great day. The sun is shining here so the chance for some natural vit D along with a stroll with the dogs.

I have extremely photosensitive skin so have to wear factor 50+ at all times even under artificial light so no chance of natural vit D for me. Haven't a clue whether it is fibro related. The consultant dermatologist didn't say and I stupidly didn't ask "brain fog" always strikes whenever I  have a hospital appointment and I usually end up leaving the symptom diary on the table at home.  Consultant has me on 20,000 iu vit D every other day.

Don't you just love that Fibro fog...always seems to happen when we need a really clear mind...sorry to hear you have photosensitive skin, must be a real hassle...I love being outside...when we first immigrated here from the UK in 1958 .we lived near the Bach..so off we went fir a swim etc..thought we were soo good...not really we all git bad sunburn, went to hospital emergency with big blisters etc...future beach visits, ended up very differently-with white Zink nearly all over our bodies..mm ..memories...must have looked quite funny to the bronzed Auzzies ....:-) xxx funny now..sore  then...lol

Coincidence that you raised this maggers.  One of my GPs told me that being overweight put me at risk of vitamin D deficiency because Vitamin D is extracted from the blood by fat cells, altering its release into the circulation. People with a body mass index of 30 or greater often have low blood levels of vitamin D - now I wonder if it's not a case of 'cause and effect' - ie we're not vit D deficient because we're overweight, rather the other way round, a contributory cause of the weight is the Vit D deficiency in the first place.  I just know that before I developed fibro symptoms, I was not overweight and my taste buds have changed in that I now crave sweet foods, which I never have in all my life before, in fact I hated sugary foods.  My blood sugar level is around normal, so its not diabetes.  Who knows eh.

A case of which came first the chicken or the egg.  It's just another piece of the jigsaw and the more we learn the more we have a chance of self-help.  I have cut out all refined sugars and haven't as yet missed it which I  find surprising as I have a very sweet tooth usually.  Have noticed the difference as I have lost a good few inches off my waist without really trying. Will be interesting to see what the next vit D level blood test reveals.

Hi Maggers, maybe this explains why when winter strikes ones appetite increases, salads become a little less attractive(though still enjoy them for lunch)  and one feels like more carbohydrate rich foods. I always put it down to the body's reaction to cold and the need to stock up nutrients to keep warm. Maybe the lower light levels means we absorb less vit. D and so our appetites enlarge.

I do takes supplements with calcium and Vit d as well as magnesium, as I find they all help bone density and generally aid sleep. I am allergic to dairy and so I need supplements hard to get proper levels just out of food, in my case.

    I enjoy this nutritional research.

Never really given it much thought but perhaps you are right.     I would love to spend time outside but with super photosensitive skin I have to cover up and wear factor 50+ so poor old vit D has no chance of getting to my skin.   So glad I am not allergic to dairy as I just couldn't live without cheese.

Yes I miss cheese especially Stilton and a good stiff cheddar, however it is not worth eating them just to feel ill. Such is life. Enjoy some for me please.
