Hi
I'm due for a hip replacement shortly but just been told my White Blood Cell count is low. My question is -- will they still go ahead with surgery. Thanks in advance

You really need to talk to a medic.
Did they say how low?
The normal range for the white blood cell count varies between laboratories but is usually between 4,300 and 10,800 cells per cubic millimeter of blood.
Are you having further investigations to see why it is low.

Hi Maggie
Thanks for your comment. They didn't say how low, just contacted me to say its low and asked me to book a blood retest in two weeks time. Just concerned op will get canceled as I've arranged my work and home life around the time of the operation.

HI
It depends how low it is and the reason why.
Your doctor will advise you.
Good luck, a second test may be normal.

Hi Annie. Thanks for your comment. I need to investigate further with the hospital that did the blood test and obviously wait for my next blood test in a couple of weeks.

Some years ago I had a blood test which showed a low white cell count and my Doctor sent for me to discuss it. He explained there was little that could be done to change things, but asked whether I was extra prone to picking up colds and other infections. Ironically, I wasn't - not at all. In fact I was the epitome of good health. Since then, I have had a dozen more blood tests for a number of reasons, and every one has showed a low white cell count. My GP now concedes that a low count is "normal for me" - in other words, there is nothing wrong, its something that I've had for a long time and for my body, is a normal reading. The same may well apply to you Peter, I hope so!
