metal shard bullseyed my pupil

Hi

Was wondering how long after surgery, my eye sight will restore itself.

I was paint sparying and got a bounce back and after 2 days of pain had to visit my local casualty dept.

I was found to have a foreign body which had buried itself in my pupil.

I was referded to see the eye specialist on the same day and he had a go at removing it, but failed and told me to return in 3 days.

After 5 visits and my eye picked at, scraped and messed with, the last specialist told me that he had removed it.

Although Im not in pain, or even slightly uncomfertable, my eyesight is only 50% of what it was in that eye. Its like im looking through a thin sheet of plastic sheeting and as a decorator, is pretty worrying.

My question is, should I just be patient and let nature heal it, visit my doctor for a chat, or go to my local opticians and see what they say. ??

By the way, Im a 55 year old male and previously only wore glasses for reading small print.

Any ideas guys would be appreciated

Thanks

Hi Grant, starting at the end of your story, the 'looking through a thin sheet of plastic' is the way that someone might describe vision with a cataract.

You could try your local Optician, who will be able to examine your eye but, you have to bear in mind, he isn't a medical doctor.  He can refer you to the Ophthalmologists if he finds anything that he thinks requires referral.

Did the hospital give you a follow up appointment?

I hope you are wearing protective eye wear at work now.

Unfortunately, after having someone dig around in your cornea for that long, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up with some scarring. The very front surface of the eye is usually very fast healing but it sounds like the foreign body might have penetrated more deeply. I would have expected the eye specialist to have given you some idea on healing time and if your vision would be affected though. A trip to see your optometrist couldn't hurt, they would at least be able to see how big a scar there is at the moment, and if there is a cataract as mrsmop says, they would be able to see that too.

    Hello grant07360

I know this is a very old discussion but I was wondering how your eye healed? Did you get your clear vision back again, or even partially? My husband somehow got a piece of metal right dead centre of his pupil, they removed the metal, but not the rust ring. He has the same thing, very blurred vision from that eye, and his other eye is no help as it was damaged in an accident when he was 16. So this eye is all he has and is wondering how your eye healed! Thanks!
