Mirtazapine

Hi guys, I've been taking 15mg of Mirtazepine for 5 months now. I recently spoke with my GP in regards to going to 30mg but I don't always feel I need to up the dose. She suggested that I could one night take 30mg then the next 15mg then 30mg etc. Has anyone ever done this? Is it a wise idea? Or is it best to stick to the one dose??

Thoughts please 😃

If you are feeling comfortable at 15 mg then don't increase your dose to 30 mg. In the end it is you and not your gp who will suffer from withdrawal effects . Higher the dose higher the withdrawal effects you will suffer while tapering it off. There are some people who don't suffer from withdrawal effects but still I would suggest you to take 15 mg to be on the safer side.

Trust yourself .... as you say you don't "always feel the need to increase" - 15 mg is a powerful activating dose, if you're good at that I'm sure you are right.

Anyways, alternating doses is ALWAYS a bad idea because it can play havoc with our CNS - doctors !!! ugh .....

    Wishing you well x

I had a similar discussion with my pdoc. I thought if I went to 30 mg that I would heal faster. However, I didn't really feel any better at 30 than I did at 15. It took me over a year to wean off Mirt and I know it would have been easier and faster to taper off 15. Just my thought based on my experience.

    Hi Lainylou,

I was on 15mg one day and 30mg the next for about 6 months. I did this because I couldn't tolerate a 30mg dose every day. I seemed to cope ok with this alternate dose however every now and then I would experience side effects whereby I would generally feel tense and unwell.

I went back to 15mg daily in December and this suited me better, had a bit of withdrawal but nothing too bad. I'm now tapering off Mirt and am feeling pretty good with less anxiety.

If you feel you can tolerate the 15/30mg dose it could be worth doing but to be honest if you're feeling some benefit from the Mirt at 15mg, I would say stick to it. My happier months were whilst I was on this 15mg dose.

    Good luck x
