Hello everyone, I've been on 15mg of mirtazapine for just over 5 month's. When you stop taking it how long before the horrible side effects go away. Thanks

Hi Kevin,
Do you mean you're currently experiencing side effects and thus want to stop or are you asking about withdrawal effects?
If the latter I was on 15mg for 18 months, I tapered down slowly but not slowly enough so was hit with withdrawal effects for a few months and ended up on Citalopram as the doctors thought it was a relapse - neither I nor them questioned whether it could be from Mirt withdrawal!
Go very, very slowly, plan to taper over several months, don't rush it.

Hi Kevin,
I was on 15mg for a few months also and stopped cold turkey. The side effects were horrendous for the first couple of weeks, I am in my third week now and drinking around 2-3 litres of water a day to get rid of the headache (seems to work) starting to sleep better this week and not feeling as groggy as the first couple of weeks. The sickness and lack of appetite hasn't subsided yet though - hoping it will soon. I wish I had tapered down slowly but I couldn't deal with the side effects of being on it so just wanted out.
Hope this helps.

I tapered down to 7.5mg for 2 weeks then stopped taking it.

That's very fast, near enough cold turkey, it varies from person to person, one doctor told me 8 weeks but I was definitely affected for at least 3 months...and I tapered slower than that.

Thanks Karen, I don't want to go back on the mirtazapine. I'm hoping I can stick it out but it's very hard

hi Kelvin you need to slowly tapering in order to get less side effects.Normally it will go away 1-2 week depending on individual.
