Mirtazapine Constipation & Groggy

Hello ,

I started Mirtazapine around 4 weeks ago. I am taking 7.5 mg....I have terrible constipation and grogginess. I am wondering the grogginess goes away? I like to go to the gym in the morning but having a hard time doing so. On a positive note, I was able to get off Lorazepam which I used for sleep for close to 6 years.

I have gaine around 5 pounds, however I was binge eating prior to this drug so I am not going to attribute it totally to Mirtazapine.

If the grogginess continues I might have to get off this drug.

Hi Dani, i've been on Mirtazipine for around 6 months now. The grogginess does go but Mirtazipine is more sedating the lower the dose you are on.

As a general rule of thumb the doseages have the following impact but everyone metabolises these drugs differently so this is a very generalised view after my own experiences and others i have engaged on this forum.

7.5 - 15mg - very sedating due to antihistamine receptor antagonist (treats insomnia)

15mg - 30mg seretonin and antidepressant properties kick in (treats anxiety and depression)

30 - 45mg - activating and robust for countering severe depression (severe depression)

I take 30m Mirtazipine in the evening and 50mg Setraline in the morning and starting to feel almost back to normal after a horrendous rollercoaster of trial and error with medication

Thank your for your response, what week did the grogginess go away for you? Also, were you affected by either constipation on weight gain?
