Thank you for replies...been trawling internet to find info but just seem to be doing my own head in :-(. She is comfortable at mo but very drugged up...feel so helpless. Consultant said obviously need to be 'prepared because of her age'....whilst I appreciate his honesty its all too much to take in. Thank you again for replies x

Hi Debbie so sorry to hear about your mum's fall. My father decided at the age of 91 to change a light bulb, fell and broke his hip, he had a partial hip replacement and has not had a day's bother with it since. That was 15 months ago. I know it's a slightly different story with your mum, but hope this will ease your worry. Of course she will need lots of help at home etc. She is in safe hands so please try not to worry x

Hi Christine, I'd love to know what a partial hip replacement is, you mentioned that your Dad had one?

Hi Veronica a partial hip replacement is a surgical procedure used to replace half of the hip joint. The operation involves replacing the ball of the femur only due to a fracture. It's less invasive than a thr so recovery is usually quicker, my dad has never had any problems since, thank God

      Thanks Christina,

I would love to have that done, do you remember the surgeon and where he operates.

So glad your Dad has had no problems with his, I'm a junior compared to him, but have not found a surgeon who is willing to do it.

Hi veronica, my dad's operation was in St. Mary's, Paddington, London. I will try and find out the surgeon's name. I think if you have arthiritis then a total hip replacement is your only option, my dad broke his hip so they were able to do a partial. I had a thr myself 11 weeks ago due to arthiritis and was never offered a partial, I'll post again asap x

Thanks Christine I don't have arthiritis just a worn out cartiledge. I don't know if they can replace the cartiledge (stem cell therapy years ahead) I live in London so St Mary's near me. Hope yours went well, was it in the same Hosp?

Hi Veronica my dad was treated by Dr. D. Nathwani. My op was done in Ireland. I thought worn cartilage was arthiritis? Good luck.

    Debbie

So sorry to hear about your mum and know how you must be feeling as my mum had a number of falls and you hate to see them in distress. My sister in laws mum also fell and broke her hip recently and like your mum had a hip replacement. She's amazing considering she's over 90 and is recovering well. So try not to worry, have a good cry tonight and then tomorrow you will be ready to be strong for your mum.

Glad you have found this forum as it should be a big support for you. The hospital will provide all the care your mum needs and Physio will see your mum to help her start to walk again with a frame. Occupational therapy can advise you on what arrangements will need to made to help you and your mum when she is ready to leave hospital. But first of all hope all goes for your mum tomorrow let us know how she gets on.
