My operation...

Afternoon all, my first full day at home smile

So I arrived at the hospital a at 7am on Thursday (29th Jan) only to be told I was first on the afternoon list and just had to sit in the waiting room till my time! I went down to 'new arrivals' at 11:30 op was at about 1:30. I actually don't know how long my op was or how long I was in recovery. The next day the consultant came to see me and told me all had gone well but that my large fibroid had been at the top of of my womb and the weight of it had caused my womb to fold over in half and my womb has adhered to my stomach lining, that possibly explains why my symptoms Pre op has been quite severe considering it was a relatively small 9 cm fibroid. The consultant actually seemed quite surprised by what he had found and actually said he didn't know how it had happened. During the first night my catheter did not seem to be working correctly so I had to have a bladder scan, but afterwards it seemed to right itself. On the afternoon of the day after op I also coughed up some blood so had to have a chest X Ray just to be safe, nothing untoward found so they decided I must have been hurt when they inchibated me and it had caused my wind pipe to bleed. Came home last night and slept reasonably well, feeling very tender and bloated today but have had a BM and getting my wind moving ok too. I was very light headed earlier today but I think I was dehydrated (I've never really drank a lot), I am now drinking more and monitoring what I drink and do feel better. I've also been sent home with 7 days of the dreaded blood thinning injections sad

You are welcome and I know it's hard to believe but the waiting really is the worst part, I know that now because I was a jibbering wreck (see my other topic - scared and emotional). It is hard right now but you will be fine xx

    Hiya you.

Sorry not been chatting much, being back at work is not all its cracked up to be.

you are going to have good days and bad days but the good start to take over, dont be surprised tho when a bad one just creeps up on you.my two girls know the signs now, and just say 'mum give us a cuddle you are on a low one'.

TAKE IT EASY and dont rush your recovery.

the worst is over, its weird isnt it, its the build up thats worst.

    best wishes x

I work full time in a supermarket with a lot of standing and heavy lifting. My consultant tells me that it is a 6 week recovery but I am having abdominal surgery and I am thinking also about 8-10 weeks due to experience of colleagues.I am planning going back about 3-4 hrs a day when I return.Even sitting on a till too long will be uncomfortable.

Not complaining if I can't go to work.In May 2012 I had 6 months off for celebrating 25 years in my job so 3 months off if need be will be like having half a long leave again.Hopefully by the time that I have my op the weather will be good to sit and relax in my garden. At the end of the day health comes first. Can i just ask do you get any follow up phone calls from the hospital to see how you are doing?

Your GP will sign you of for much longer, I didnt drive for 8 weeks as couldn't guarantee I could do an emerg stop so not allowed.

I too abnominal cut, you definitely wont be back after 6 weeks. Dont let anyone tell you different. You will know how your body feels and no one else.

before you go back to work request a phased return meeting with your manager, its not just the hours its the job too, Im back full time now but still on light duties.i still have discomfort and swelling after sitting for long time at desk or twisting but thats normal apparently. Good luck

Did your consultant sign you off straight away?Did you have to go back to him for a check up or just your doctor?

      Hi Teresa,

I was given a letter from the ward with a list of dos and don'ts,advising if i fell unwell when i got home to contact my GP and that i would get a phone call 3 days after i got home from the ward sister to see how i was getting on

Well i am now 19 days post op and needless to say not heard a thing from the hospital..I do think it varies widely from one hospital to another though as i didn't have to do follow injections when i got home, had my stockings taken off day 3 whilst still in hospital, have no follow up appointment at all and was given a sickness certificate for only 4 weeks dispute having a full cut for TAH with BSO so basically everything removed

GP has been great though and has said she will continue with issuing sick notes for as long as i need them as following the surgery i have had done i will be off for a lot longer

I do feel sorry for the nurses on the ward though as they were brilliant, its just there is no support given from the hospital once you have been discharged,at least not from my hospital in Reading ,Berkshire.

      ,Hi Terea

Its the same at my surgery but as soon as you tell the receptionist you are post hysterectomy they deem to put you down as a priority.Mind you i haven't actually had to visit my surgery as my doctor has phoned me back each time i have called and even issued more painmeds, stool softeners on prescription for my husband to collect from the surgery on his way home from work. When is your op scheduled for?

      Hi Judy,

I am having Zoladex injections for 3 months to try and reduce the size of my fibroids prior to my surgery.I have several fibroids and one is very large. The injections should make the surgery easier(hopefully).I have only had 1 injection at the moment, the 2nd one is due on Mon.

Just read your info on sick notes, my gyno said I will be having a TAH taking ovaries too, she told me I would be off work for 3 months, I ve told work ( there's 2 of us in an office, the other one is my manager!) she turned to me and said ' where you got 3 months from? You can't drive for 6 wks so after that you can sit behind your desk and come to work!' I was stunned by her reaction. I was only recapping what my gyno had told me. My husband has gone berserk, qsaying how heartless she can be

I found that too, alot of people dont realise the different types of hysterectomy, I too had TAH with overies removed, they assume everyone has keyhole and reduced surgery, just ignore them

Dear Alan Thanks for your email.  Did not mean to step out of line, Judy and I are both awaiting our ops (we both got cancelled) and Judy knew my husband was very sick and wanted to know what I was dealing with.  It is so nice to have someone interested, usually when you are a carer people tend to avoid the issue.  Then I got so frustrated at not being able to communicate with Judy in desperation I thought if she had my email she could decide if she wanted to communicate that way.

I love your forum and the ladies on there are very supportive, and I certainly would hate to offend any of them or you.  So please accept my apologies.

I am using a monster of a desktop (Screen 27" ) I use Windows 7 (this system works like my brain so we get on well!), and I use Google Chrome Browser.  I am quite happy for you to pass my email address onto Judy.

      Again sincere apologies.

      Warmest Wishes

      Jacqui
