wow, what a ride. i have been experiencing hemorrhoids now since i was in my mid 20's. They really got bad around 2011. I had colonoscopy in the summer of 2011, but nothing but hemmies were found, which i guess was a good thing.

fast forward to 2014. they came back with a vengeance. i ended up in the ER from excruciating pain bc nothing was helping. sitz baths, creams, natural remedies, NOTHING! they ended up being able to push the hemmie back in, but the pain!my gastro finally referred me to a colorectal surgeon within his network, and i decided to try out rubber band litigation. i first needed to get the swelling down a whole lot, which i was able to with a change in my diet and also more water intake. had a few of these litigations done and things seemed to be on the up and up. i would have a tiny flare up here and there, but was able to take care of them. occasionally, i had time where id have a burst and my butt would be leaking blood for like 15 minutes post bm, it just became something of the norm for myself. the doctors said there was not much to do with that, but just watch what i ate. i definitely ignored that and continued eating red meat (which is probably my biggest culprit).

fast forward to jan 31 2021. holy sh&t. my butt exploded. a really severe and big hemmie fell out of my tush area. i was in pain. i could barely walk, i could barely talk bc of the pain. i sitz bathed, i had my wife buy all the remedies, and i also made sure to be kind to the area. nothing really helped. now i am a teacher and i have to be on my feet pretty much all day. thank Gd, the day time was not as terrible, but when i got home, the size felt as if it increased with each hour during the day. sitz bath's still gave some relief and the swelling went down minimally, but what i didnt do was increase my fiber intake or start taking stool softeners. it was bad.

super bowl sunday is when it hit head on. i couldnt do anything. i felt like someone took a knife and was stabbing my butthole over and over and over again. now i also have a 5 year old at home, and to her i am the strongest man alive. her seeing me in this moment of weakness was very difficult. she should never have to see me like this and she did.

anyways, i made a call to my general practioner, got some hydrocortione 2.5%, which helped very little. sitz still did not help. i ended up making an appointment with a gastro who specializes in hemmies for the next day (monday), but he was not even able to get his scope up my tush bc the size and inflamation of the hemmies. i was at a loss. my wife and i left the office, and on a whim called my colorectal surgeon who had helped me previously. thank Gd i got an appointment later that day. went in at 2pm to the surgeon, she tried to get them back in with her finger and cream, but to no avail. she started to mention excisional hemorrhoidectomy surgery and before she could finish, i said yes, what do i need to do? i had to check myself into the ER at one of the local NYC hospitals, and we took it from there.

suregry was tuesday (2/9). after surgery, things felt fine. but the night time was the most intense pain ever. i was crying, i was throwing up, i was just not myself. it was terrible. i pretty much stayed in bed all day wednesday at the hospital until my parents brought me to my home to be with my family. we cant have my daughter with us because between my wife taking care of me, her and the dog, i think we would all have mental breakdowns.

anyways, thursday thru saturday were rough. saturday was the hardest day by far. i had to stop taking the prescribed dilauded bc it helps for 15 minutes and then im in pain again. so we have been switching between ibprufen and tylenol. i have a prescription for xanax which has also helped a bunch, but i am trying not to rely on it, just to get sleep when i need it.

i also took my first s**t last night, which was the most painful thing in the world. it was actually two rounds in the tub. the first one, as someone in another message explained it, like sh*tting shards of glass. the second one was also hard, but not as bad. just my poor butthole. it felt like a miracle to finally go! but having to go in the bathtub was really weird for me.

anyways, that is part of my journey after 5 days. just trying to get better so i can be a functional father, husband, and teacher.

when did people start going back to work after excisional hemorrhoidectomy?

I was out of work for 6 weeks. I am 5 months post op. I'm actually going this Thursday for an in office procedure to remove a fat skin tag left from this surgery. While it will feel never ending it does get better. Keep your bowels soft. Stool softeners & fiber help. I will take 3 stool softeners daily. Pooping in the tub happened a lot. I even pooped in my sitz tub for every BM for 6 weeks.
