Myopia and Astigmatism

what is the relation between myopia and astigmatism? my daughter was prescribed -1.5 sphere with cylinder correction or she could use -1.75 sphere only correction.

in my recently operated eye, time lights on stove are distorted but they get very clear with -1 glasses. now the iol is -0.45 myopic and that eye have almost -1 astigmatism which was NOT corrected with toric or LRI. so does this mean i need -0.5 glasses and some cylinder correction? also the -1 glasses distort the near vision with panoptix only slightly and if at all anything get rid of the ghosting.

also the -1 glasses will clear very faraway items like the roof of an apartment will get a little sharper but the TV that is 13 feet away will become little blurrier.

Not sure if you are talking contacts or eyeglasses for your daughter. With eyeglasses both sphere and cylinder can be corrected to the 0.25 D precision for both, and to the 1 degree for axis. And normally eyeglasses with or without cylinder correction cost the same, so one would always get the exact sphere and cylinder. However with contacts the corrections steps are not as fine for cylinder and the axis angles are in 5 degree steps if I recall. And toric lenses tend to be more expensive, so sometimes if the cylinder is fairly low you can use sphere only contacts. If for example you needed -1.5 D sphere and -0.5 D cylinder you can approximate that by going sphere only (non toric) and then add 50% of the cylinder to the sphere. So you would use a -1.75 D sphere only.

    .

With your PanOptix if there was a miss of -1.0 D for distance I would expect a -1.0 D prescription eyeglass lens would correct that without messing up your intermediate distances. You would not want an add for near as that could mess up intermediate. However, those are the issues you get into with a MF lens. With a monofocal IOL miss of -1.0 D you would normally go with eyeglasses at -1.0 D sphere and a +2.5 D add.

its glasses. so i have a -0.5 sphere miss and a -1 uncorrected cylinder then i can use -1 sphere glasses or use -0.5 sphere and -1 cylinder?

A -0.5 D sphere miss plus a -1.0 D cylinder adds up to a spherical equivalent of -1.0 D. So a first approximation correction with eyeglasses would be a -1.0 D sphere, but you would get significantly better vision by correcting the sphere and cylinder with a prescription lens that corrects both independently and correctly. I would expect you would gain a half line or possibly a full line.

thanks. -1 does make it comfortable. vision was like that without -1 for about 7-9 days. after that the astigmatism kicked in and was noticeable through ghost image of moon and far away lights. also the -1 correction will constrict the concentric circle to a much smaller area than without correction to the point that they are not bothersome.

I was talking to my friend that has bilateral PanOptix lenses on the weekend. She has gotten prescription "driving glasses" for use on the road, and continues to use OTC readers for the best reading vision.

i think driving glasses would be helpful with this lenses especially at night. absolute plano will minimize the light effects..

for close up i see a drop between 20 to 26 inches.

After my right eye cataract surgery vision was stable, I also was left with about -1D cylinder but near plano (0.0) sphere. That was using a monofocal toric IOL too, but that eye originally had nearly -3D cylinder so it was a big improvement even with some residual astigmatism.

With only -1D cylinder now, my right eye gets pretty good distance vision about 20/25-20/30. But my left eye which hasn't need cataract surgery still has over -2D cylinder astigmatism so it gets about 20/70 or so uncorrected. So I use eyeglasses most of the time mainly to correct the left eye but also corrects that -1D cylinder in the right eye with the IOL and then I can get better than 20/20 distance vision in both eyes, actually 20/15!

in the operated eye with residual astigmatism, how do the lights look without correction glasses?

Slight artifacts around lights like a halo or similar.
