I have just started on Orlistat today and I'm really glad that I found this website before I began taking them! Your advice has given me some warning about what to expect that I think the leaflet with the medication played down somewhat!
I am 5' 9\" and weight 14.5 stone. I have been dieting on my own for about six months now, doing exercise everyday and the weight has not been coming off. I'd been to the doc before about my weight (I'd put on nearly 5 stone in under two years which I related directly to the contraceptive pill as I have always been slim and never had weight problems before) but she just said that I need to diet and exercise more!
After advice from my fiance and friend, I decided to keep a food diary so that I could show her exactly what I was eating, I also made a note of exercise and she agreed that I was doing everything right but no weight loss so prescribed Orlistat.
I must admit, when I read some of the nightmare side effects on here I was a bit put off but have decided that I will give them a go. To be forewarned and all that.
Like I said, today's my first day so we'll see. I'm so scared to eat anything with fat content though!
I'll let you all know how I get on.

Have been eating all low fat food and have not had the side effects that others have mentioned on this forum. Getting a bit despondent. I think I need to increase the amount of exercise that I do so am gonna try running a mile every night and see if this makes a difference. I'll let you know how I get on. L.X

I myself tried running but because I'm overweight I had terrible pain in my hips. So I have stopped until I have lost more weight (maybe I wont have the same pains when I'm lighter) The trainer at my gym says whatever weight you are, times that by three and that's how much weight you are putting on your joints when you're running, lets say for instance, that a person is 10 stone, so when they run the pressure on their joints is that of a 30 stone person. Pretty sobering thought for me as i weigh 12 stones (36 stone) of weight on my joints....no wonder i had pain in my hips.

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean about pain when running. I have always been a really keen runner and never suffered any pain (but I only weighed 10 stone then). When I put on the weight, I suddenly developed shin splints (that I'd never had before!)
I still find it painful to run (especially on roads) but I am getting so desperate to lose some weight (the walking that I do - 2 miles everyday) is not making any difference to my weight loss. I thought if I did some more energetic exercise it would help. It's such a vicious circle. Getting quite fed up!

I'm on day 4, and the orange oil not been too bad, seems to be always some there when I do go to the loo, but I've not had to dash to the loo at all, just the normal really.
I'm off to Florida in 4 weeks and wondering whether to take the tabs while I'm there, with not knowing what they cook in, I'm not sure what to do. Think I'll have a word with the nurse when I go for my first weigh in in 3 weeks.
This forum is great, so glad I found it.

A classic example....when I got back off holiday, I went out for a meal and had parsnip soup, which you would think would be okay but it was full of cream and I ended up having bloody orange oil everywhere, after not really having much of a problem with it! It was a nightmare! I won't do it again, that's for sure.
I also seem to still be stuck at the 14 stone mark (going down to 13 stone 10lbs at times) but always back up to 14 stone.
At the moment, the doctor seems to think this okay 'cos overall I have lost weight, but I am worried if no weight loss continues, she will take me off them.
