new to fluoxetine (prozac). any advice?

Hey, I have just started fluoxetine and am really anxious about weight gain as I'm on it for bulimia and I'm a dancer and model. Did any of you experience weight gain? Also it's been two weeks and I'm feeling no better, is this normal?

welcome to prozac world! sorry to say but two weeks is very early to expect much from the Fluoxetine, on average 8-12 weeks before significant changes are felt, with the odd crap day thrown in. Sadly it's no quick fix, a long drawn out process, however it is so worth the wait, truely is. On average I would say that most people lose approx 2 stone especially in the first few weeks, with the odd exception to the rule, ie me, who put weight on, but I'm a greedy so and so at times
so I'm afraid to say it's a game of patience you are playing. I hope you achieve your goal in as short a time as possible to let you get your career back on track Pippa, best wishes for your Fluoxetine journey

my 19 yr old daughter is on it, week 12 now, she hasnt put any weight on at all, she has suddenly got a sweet tooth and wants some chocolate each day, but as she is quite active, and only a size 8, her weight hasnt been affected.
i noticed my daughter was feeling the benifit after 9 days on the tablets, but she didnt start to feel any changes until about week3/4. everyone is different though. and we had a rough ride with side effects, but she is now in a good place, and back enjoying life. xx

no, she doesnt sing hunny. well she does, but only round the house! if you look back on the pages i have done a weekly diary since the beginning, all her side effects, and the good things i noticed. i would love to hear how you are doing, its a long road, but it will get better. she takes the flux pill each morning about 9am, and then at tea time she has a vitamin b tablet, and a good probiotic tablet, this stopped her feeling sick, anything you want to know, just ask hunny. xx

I really hope that you guys stick around on these forums, it's so lovely to know I'm not alone. My mum told me to just "snap out of it and act normal" so I don't have much support around me.

But more than anything, after an honest chat with a very good friend, I actually took some responsibility by facing the changes in me towards my family due to the influence & manipulation of another.
"I" needed to build bridges with my loved ones in order to regain the strong bond we always shared.
It is a shame Pippa if you are not getting support & understanding but sometimes we have to look at ourselves, are we playing the victim because we are not emotionally stable? Talking & understanding is so important, it addresses the root of the problem, flu isn't the magic cure, it just helps us feel more rational & balanced emotionally, eventually helping us tackle whatever it was that got us to the point we felt desperate enough to reach out for assistance.

Youre so right, fluox is not a cure all just a leveller to help us deal with the cause - You have to fight to get better too.
Very well said. All the best for your recovery

I actually lost 2 stone through nausea most of it before starting fluox, I love my food but like the new slimmer me! Thought id pile it all back on once the nausea stopped around wk 6 and over xmas but ive only put around 4lbs back on so I dont think the fluox has had any effect itself (other than ive only drunk once or twice on it but id only normally drink once a month probabbly anyway so that wouldnt account for all those calories!). Im around wk14.
I'd say as the others have youre not likely to feel the benefits until maybe wk6-8 with some improvement wk-12 for more noticeable change with lots of ups n downs tho some feel better sooner -hope youre one of those. Sorry not what you want to hear but if you know youre facing a long bumpy road youll be more prepared to handle it. :-)
Youre not alone theres lots of lovely people on here that offer great support and advice. My dr recommended a book depression the curse of the strong - your mum should maybe read that then she'd realise that "snap out of it!" Is the most ridiculous thing to say, if we could we would!!! Hope you find more support in other family or friends. Have you had or asked for counselling too? That'll probably help esp if youve not much support at home.
Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery, one day at a time.
Take care

Yes I have told my Mum exactly that, if I could snap out of it I would. No one chooses this! I will recommend that book to her, thanks for suggesting it.
I am restarting counsselling next week (I only like one psychologist and she has been on maternity leave) so hopefully this will help along with the meds. As jkt said I have to work alongside the meds to get better. x

Great youre getting counselling. Hmmmmm the recommendation for fluox is to stay on meds for a min of 6 months after you feel better for anxiety/depression - dont know if that applies in your case but I do know coming off them too soon or too quickly can lead to a relapse down the line. Bear it in mind for your long term plans maybe?
Take care
